Type 81....

I will be interested in picking one of the paratrooper versions of the type 81. However I would like a review off someone who receives it, so I can know what to expect. I read the guns & ammo one and it didnt seem like a bad review of the rifle. And there had to be a reason why the Chinese chose to replace the type56 with it.

Chinese replaced it mainly as the 81 is a full auto weapon, with semi auto switch. That is my understanding anyway... No revolutionary engineering advances that I am aware of.

So if 81 arrive as a semi... Why ?

Because the AK-47 and all variants are prohibited.

Its like those people who can't afford an actual mad fast sports car, but they can afford cars that LOOK like mad fast sport cars. Same deal is with the Type-81, just replace "Can't afford" with "Cannot legally own", and replace "mad fast sports cars" with "the AK47".

There's more to the Type 81 than an alternative to the AK, having lots of experience with the Type 56, the PLA was not as knocked out by it's incredible reliability as many in the west are. The Type 81 was designed to be more reliable than the AK and simpler to make.

But if they retail in Canada expect to pay more than 4 times the amount than a simple AK. I heard the target range for retail on these rifles will be around the $1,100 mark. So if it does come in around that mark I think I just might stick with my 858 that costed me $600 back in '08 when it just got released.

Well to be fair, the not so industrially sophisticated China of the time didn't make a very good AK.

There's a reason why during the Vietnam War, the Chinese would often "misplace" shipments of Vietnam bound Russian manufactured AKs travelling through their territory, keeping them for their own use, and replaced them with Type 56 AKs.

Anyways, while another Red rifle is always welcome I'll be sticking with the VZ58 for now.

Very, very interested in this rifle.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up, as the RCMP still has to classify this and logic often escapes them, but it's hard to not be at least a bit excited!

This shot to the top of my list.

True Dat!
Since I got the Gremlin fixed on my VZ it shoots like a charm.
If I want SKS reliability I'll just reach into the safe and pull out the 175$ SKS before I blow 1000$

The CZ858 made it through as non-res so surely someone is forcing them to think while evaluating firearms. I think it stands a good chance of being non-res in LMG flavour. Price will be high but they will sell like hot cakes.

That's what I keep telling myself. Also, they're talking to the factory about getting them to add an extra inch of barrel on to the normal one too, so that'll be good!

yea... lighter weight milled vz58 for me. triggergroup of the vz looks a lot more simple too.
still, the more red rifles the merrier.

funny how everything is now priced around a grand lately

Interesting American thread with some close up pictures of the semi-auto Type 81 can be found here:

Looks like it takes standard 7.62x39 AK mags to me. I'm definitely in... :D
