Just got my first 91/30 and the bayonet is stuck on backwards (blade is pointing at shooter), I assume this is done for shipping. Does anyone have any ideas how I might get it off, I've tried a rubber mallet and padded vise grips with no luck? All the videos and articles I've found are about removing and installing blade forward, not backwards.

Your not hitting it hard enough. Heck I use the back of the bolt as a hammer to take mine off. It's also good for hammering over the front sight ;) It's a Mosin not a Mauser

If you are going to play with guns, (especially Russian) the best tool to have is a 12 to 16 oz brass hammer. It solves a lot of problems.

It was ussually carried backward on the rifle. Just use hammer and some wood to knock it down. If it is backwards it is not locked

Finally got it, thanks to everyone for the advice. Glad I wasn't in a foxhole trying to hammer that bastard off.

Just a heads up, its tight like a bastard when it goes on the proper way as well. The Russian Doctrine was that rifle was to have the bayonet affixed at all time. The only time a bayonet was to come off, was during storage or during transportation in small vehicles. It has to be knocked off when installed the proper way too. If you want to take it on and off, you might want to try reaming the inside of the bayonet a bit with a dowel and sandpaper.
