We bought 1,300 or so M-113A1s in the mid sixties, then 176 M-113 1/2 Lynx in 1967. To that we added a few hundred 6X6 Grizzlies in the seventies, then replaced the Lynx with 203 Coyotes in the mid nineties. We then bought over 650 LAV 3s, relegating the Grizzlies to 'gun tractor' duties with the Artillery before gifting them to the African Union for peacekeeping. We have since upgraded our LAV 3 fleet (ongoing) and modernized some of the 113 fleet, to include rubber tracks, new drive trains and power packs, adding the Grizzly turrets and 'stretching' some. We are also looking at purchasing a 'heavy' APC to accompany our Leopard 2 based Battle Groups. We have nine infantry battalions in our army. In 1965 we had fifteen. We don't need 1300 M-113s any more.
It does, however, remain our most suitable AFV for Arctic ops due to its low ground pressure.
