why the 3030?

Haha I love how a 30-30 thread got moved to the hunting section, meanwhile the mods in the Red Rifles forum ##### whenever you make a 7.62x39 thread.

You have to come to terms with the difference between "want" and "need".

Your native buddies obviously don't "need' anything more than the 30-30 for the type of hunting they do. They have confidence in their rifles and that - more than anything - puts meat on the pole.

A 30-30 is just a light, low recoil, short and compact rifle that has cheap and plentiful ammo available.

To a lot of people this a cause for hype because of the convience and comfort of shooting.

Oh, you are so right.
The manufacturers figured this out a very long time ago. Slight change, a bit better looking in the ballistics department, sell lots of them.
market clogged up? Make another slight change, more sales of a "better" rifle.
Market slowing down? Shorten and fatten the case! More sales.
Give new rifles to the gun editors so they will write exagerated accounts of their great performance.
And on and on.

You write that like keeping the firearms manufacturers in business is a bad thing.

As a well-made rifle will last for a few lifetimes it wouldn't be long before all the gun makers would be tits up due to lack of sales if not for the new and shiny developments.

I wondered about people chosing the 30-30 way back when i was selling them at Woolco. Cheap 94's, and 30-30 ammo were just flying off the shelves. After talking to a few customers and other hunters, this is what I got.

- My dad and grandad used it and they were great hunters so I'll use it too. (Major factor)
- The rifle and the ammo are cheap and available. (Major factor)
- It's light and handy. (Minor factor)

I can honestly say that I wouldnt have gotten my buck this year if I had been using a bolt gun. The quick handling lever made it possible. I felt way more pride getting deer with it. Also carries nice to boot.

BECAUSE IT IS COOL! enough said. 30-30s in my eyes suck compared to the other white tail cartridges 308, ought six etc. but i dont think there is a calibre that has taken more wild game the the ol' 30-30. i own one because i think everyone should. i reload for it and you sure cant fit very much powder in there lol. but i will never part with my 94. brush gun with open sights. at 150yds not much gets away when im holding it anyway. light. fast handling. the natives around here swear by them. deer, bear, moose. you name it! back in the day guys were loading up 220g in them but that seemed to fade out. now a days i can only find data for up to 170g. just as well i guess lol.

You write this as a pessimist thinks.
Don't mess with a good thing and it will get worn out and replaced.
Phukc with it too much and the taste buds sour.
So what is your point?
The only new rifles I bought in my lifetime is the T-Bolt I bought this year from DSG. It said Browning on it.
One other was a grad present for my daughter.
T-Bolts have been around for many moons, as it's parent maker.
Meat and t'atters hasn't lost it's flavor either.
They toss chit out there called Tofueey, but it don't match up to
the real thing.
YMMV

Firearms are not like cars with built-in obsolescence.

Take care of a good rifle and it won't get "worn out". A case in point is my old Model 1894 chambered in 30 WCF. (The cartridge that is the subject of this thread BTW) It is 95 years old this year and it still shoots as good as the day it was built. I shot many deer, a few moose, and the only elk I have ever taken with that old carbine.

I understood it as exactly as the way he intended it.
Change the flavor to promote sales, for better or worse.
Arguementive are we? V:I:
And closet babes don't get worn out, you're right on this one.

I never heard of anyone loading 220's into a .30/30 case. I'm assuming these were .30/40 Krag projectiles and I think they would encroach on powder space badly, the .30/30 isn't a very big case. In my neck of the woods the .303 Savage was rated a better moose rifle by many years ago as they were available with 190 grain bullets but that is about the heaviest bullet that was offered in the .30/30 class of cartridges.

if you don't like the 30-30/m94-1895-99-340 or whatever, buy something else and quit questioning MY choice.
P.S. Can you capitalize a period?

Nah, them 30-30's ain't what they're cracked up to be. I use one of them new-fangled 32 Winchester Specials. Much better. Why, I could shoot a deer.....:D Seriously, I have used a .32 for the last few years. I missed out on hunting this year, but hope to switch to an old 1899 Savage .303 for a year.

I don't know how you could possibly get that meaning out of what I wrote.
Read it again and read carefully.
You should see where I state the manufacturers were terrific at making and marketing an article that shooters bought up in great numbers.
This was no easy feat, because there was very little difference in their new designs.

From what I've read and have been told the correct analogy of the 30-30 would be this.

The small block 350 GM engine has been around for a long time. They have brought out better, more efficient and more powerful engines, but the 350 does an outstanding job as far as small block V8's are concerned.

So if it works for you and you get the results you want for the purpose you have and at the price you want to pay then there is no reason to go to bigger or better. That applies to guns and ammo as well.

Why do you think the .22LR is still around? There are better rounds but not at the price of a .22LR. Guns are all about results, cost, recoil tolerance, weight, and personal preference and enjoyment.

i imagine that 220's wouldnt be good at all but ive heard storys. never attempted it personally. if it did work out fine the projectile would be going very slow anyway.... and yes there are WAY better guns for moose, i wouldnt take a 30-30 or a 303 savage moose hunting. just saying what the northerners do.
