Hello all !

I am going to purchase a Chinese SKS from Marstar in the coming new year.

I am interested in painting the stock. I am thinking yellow or red to give it that "toy" look. I want to still be able to see the laminate lining.

What kind of sand paper will I need ? Also, what paint will work well?
(spray paint?)

I am also intested in purchasing a muzzle break and red dot scope.
Any reccomendations, perhaps the ones marstar sell. (good prices)

Thanks for the help. I will post pictures when I am finished. There are a few other upgrades I will be doing as well.

thanks for the help !

Chinese SKS dont have laminate stocks

IMO leave your poor gun alone and just shoot it ;)

I agree with Dsiwy. Just shoot it. But if you have your hear set on changing the stock colour, heres what to do.

Don't sand it. Sanding removes wood, changing the shape (I know only slightly but still). Go get some 'Circa 1850' paint stripper to remove the old finish. Then get some exterior semi-transparent stain. Give it 2 or 3 coats. The semi transparent stain will still reveal the wood grain. Home Hardware carries both items.

You may want to put on a clear top coat. You don't have too, but if you plan to shoot in a lot of moisture, it wouldn't hurt. It might darken the colour up a bit. (make sure this is exterior stuff too)

EDIT: The stripper might not get right back to bare wood. You might have to do it a couple of times. Even then it might not be light enough to go to a yellow. Really think about it you want to see the wood grain or not. You can save yourself a lot of time an money it you saw 'screw it' and just krylon the stock your desired colour. $10 can of spray paint and 15 minutes a day for 3 days (a day dry time in between 3 coats) vs $50 as stated above and 4-5 days of work, (half hour to an hour a day with a day dry time in between coats)

Its a Chinese SKS, paint it if you want. 5 million were made.

Thank you. I already own a CZ 858 which I am keeping stock. Im buying a Chinese SKS from Marstar and then a Russian SKS from a local gun shop.

One is going to get tweaked, and the other is going to remain stock.

Thanks for some of your comments. They are all appreciated. But lets not forget that its a $200 rifle. So if I simply paint the stock, I dont think its the end of the world.

Sorry again, for posting this in the wrong section. I guess red rifles would be more of an appropriate section.

Atleast you guys know where my heart lies when it comes to guns !!!!
-Milsurp that is !!

Buy a spare stock & paint it, they are cheap & you can leave the matching one as is.

This....

Talk about an SKS being painted but no pics! :(

The Chinese made a fiberglass stock and handguard for jungle use. They're sort of a washed out red colour. There is one for sale on Ebay right now. IT would definitely give you the "toy" look that you are going for while actually preserving part of the SKS's history.
I did a re-fin on a Chinese stock just for fun and it turned out pretty good. I bought a couple of Russian stocks that had to be finished with the intention of putting a nice Russian laminate on a Chinese gun. Unfortunately the Russian wood is quite a bit smaller at the front end and doesn't fit well on a Chinese SKS. Being a Milsurp fan, of course I don't want to see you paint the wood. Get a Tapco or ATI and paint the s**t out of it. Keep the wood and you'll appreciate it when you come back to your senses.:D
See you in the Southside.
