I was just watching a remington 870 takedown video on YouTube and noticed the 870 has a cap for the spring in the magazine tube underneath the end nut cap. This cap requires a screwdriver to wedge out when you want to remove the mag spring.

I bought my Grizzly used off EE and it does not have this spring cap. Do new Grizzly's come with this part?

yes, someone might have removed it in orderto fit another round in the mag. I think its only function is that you can remove the barrel without the mag spring flying out.

My 8.5 grizz has one. My rem 870 came stock with a extended mag tube, so it did not come with the spring retention device

Thanks you both for the info. I think it also prevents the mag spring from unscrewing the end cap under firing/recoil. I need to keep a rubber o-ring between the mag tube and my end cap in order to prevent this.

I think I'll go buy a mag spring retainer to make it more secure. On a mag tube that can hold four 2.75" rounds, will adding a mag spring retainer cut the capacity?

Before you go looking for one, check inside the mag tube to see if there is the dimples/detents that are necessary for using the spring retaining cap.

You guys are talking about different caps.

OP is referring to the metal cap found in Wingmasters, these are metal and normally need to be pried out, they have been known to shoot out on their own as well.

jlomein, check your magtube, if it has two dimples in it then it should have a Remington express style spring retainer, which is plastic. The retainer is also what keeps tension on the magazine cap so without it you'll find it loosening from use.

my grizz , got it yesterday :)!!!....was 2+1, undid the mag cap removed black plastic "ratchet" plug/spring retainer....now it is 3+1 with 2 3/4" shells
i think the retainer might be cut to still work as the mag cap retainer...but the o-ring is a better idea!..thanx
