i have a ithaca 37 serial # range is565### its blued with the wildlife scene on the both sides .On the left side of the reciever its stamped U.S. above that is a letter P and there is a letter P stamped of the barrel. The heat shield over the barrel is a reproduction one because it looks new.Does anyone know if this serial number would be in the range of a ithaca trench gun and what would it be worth without the original heat shied because I'm thinking of selling it or maybe trade it for a m1 garand in any cond as long as it shoots plus cash if need be.I'll try to put some picks up tomorrow .

In 1962 Ithaca put several M37 M&Ps together for a military contract proposal. Called the Vietnam Model according to Walter Snyder's book.
But my book indicates they were all parkerized, with an S serial number prefix. With the US stamp is on the RH side of the receiver directly above the anvil factory proofmark, and P proof marks on the LH side of the barrel and just behind it another P on the upper receiver. During WW2 certainly blued guns with the wildlife scenes, were outfitted with the ventilated upper hand guard & bayonet mount, but as stated here, your serial number falls into 1954ish production. Now there were some Post WW2 military contracts and in the intervening years the records were lost unfortuneately. But from what information you have provided here, I think you have a copy of the Ithaca trench gun. Someone was trying to artificially pump up it's price. I feel pretty confident in saying, you have a strudy fixed barrel Ithaca with a neat attachment and that's it friend.

I don't know what to say, other than this quote from page 97:

According to old Ithaca records an Ithaca serial number sequence commencing with S1000 and ending with S24399 was complimented with a government serial number commencing with 50000 and ending with 71999.

end
