I am getting interested in owning a non restricted black rifle. Ideally I would like one in .308 and one in .223. I really like the look of the Swiss arms 550 I think it is called, also like the look of the Sig rifles but don't know much about them, anyone sell them up here? Are they restricted? Any good?
Or are there any other brands I should be looking at, H&k?
I want to get out and hunt and shoot where I want so I won't buy a restricted one. Any ideas much appreciated. Cheers Roscoe

Swiss Arms Black Special or Classic Green is what there actually called in Canada, they are identical to the SG550 but without the ability to fire full auto, this makes them extremely reliable and there longevity is amazing. You would definitely be picking what I feel to be the best possible option out there. Look at the EE if you want to save big bux on a near new Rifle.

People around here are crazy about new guns with low round counts, with a Swiss Arms Rifle, anything under 1500-2000 is still low, the Swiss make these rifles to go home with there soldiers and be ready to use at a moments notice for the rest of there lives. For example the barrel will last approx. 20000 up to 30000 rounds before needing to be replaced. 15000 rounds for wearing parts of the bolt assembly are quite feasible, other small components will last for anything up to 30000 rounds. Major components such as trigger housing, bolt, receiver, plastic parts, the main components of the trigger action may readily be expected to withstand 40000 rounds. There have weapons at the plant which have major components still fully functional after firing 80000 up to 100000 rounds.

This just gives you an idea of how long these things are supposed to last, go to the EE and get an amazing rifle with a couple hundred round through it for $2800-$2900 and don't listen to all these people who tell you there too expensive, they like to quote you the $3600 off of retailers websites to justify it and make it sound more expensive, but everyone knows they can be had for as low as 2700 on the EE, I feel sorry for those who can only dream of owning and using a rifle in a class all of it's own.

Read more about the destructive testing and the abuse that the swiss put these rifles through here

Also, the Sig556 is Prohibited by name, and is a piece of s**t compared to a genuine Swiss Rifle.

FWIW, the Swiss Arms and HK's are both non restricted if you buy the right barrel length. the Current Swiss arms in Canada are based on the Sig 540, as the 550 are prohibited. Any gun retailer can order you either the HK or Swiss Arms as they all have access to the importer. They cost more than many other semi auto 223's but if you consider the overall lifespan of the rifle the ownership cost is in fact less.

Accuracy on both is very good MOA with good ammo and a good shooter.

The U.S. 556 that was metioned is U.S. version of the 550 and the first 4000 that made it into the U.S. were made with mostly swiss parts and were excellent rifles, the later models were made with U.S. parts and the quality control has been poor at best as the tolerances became sloppy as the tooling wore. There have been major issues with the U.S. 556 platfrom as of late which has really given sig USA a bad name, and justifiably so as SIG USA was approached by experts to help resolve the issues and refused the help, not because of cost but because of ego's.

If you are in the Market for either you won't go wrong with either the HK or SAN, they are excellent rifles, and we in Canada are fortunate to get them and be able to use them.

SAN does have a 308 model and its currently under review by the RCMP. If approved as a non-restricted it will be the best semi auto 308 available anywhere in my opinion. SAN in 223 and 308 would be a perfect match. Have 10K at the ready though as they don't come cheap, but then nothing worth while is cheap.

Your other options for 308 are HK MR308 which is an excellent rifle, although heavy and restricted, and there are a few others, mostly restricted, some not

if you want matching HK makes an MR223 also, it too is restricted heavy, and a heck of a rifle.

Ach, sisch immer dr glich mischt:rolleyes: From the Swiss Arms sticky:

There exists the SIG550 and The PE90. We all have the PE90 regardless of what color it is. And there is most certainly a difference in the steel structures of both lower and upper receivers between the two rifles.

Spend some time and study the dimensions and features of the lower and upper receivers and you will see the differences between them. Here are some noticeable ones.

PE90 top, SIG 550 bottom.

On the 550 lower there is a hump on the outside right to accomodate its trigger group. This is part of the stamping. The PE90 does not have this feature.

SIG 550 on left PE90 on right.

Left upper: On left lower side of bolt carrier there is a small shiny tab attached to the receiver. The upper on the right does not have it. Compare those two areas of the receiver, they are different.

All our SA's are stamped PE90 which is a purpose designed SEMI ONLY SPORT VERSION that will not accept the FA parts of the 550.

PE stands for Präzision Einzelfeuer (Precision Singlefire).

Yes the barrels, gas systems and furniture are the same but the receivers are differently designed and are SIG 540 based.

Since the receiver is the firearm, it is not the same rifle which is why it is allowed here (think rcmp lab). Receiver is based on the 540, which is the firearm, other parts don't mean sh!t.

Canadian Gun laws and criteria is some of the most retarded f**ked up s*it I have ever read through, don't try to make sense out of nonsense.

Let's just be happy they are allowed here.

Ahhhhh.

Thank you good sir!

The discussed rifle was built from the ground up as a semi auto competition shooting rifle using new differently designed receivers that are SIG 540 based.

Since the receiver is the firearm, it is not the same rifle. They do use the same barrels and other parts but the receiver is based on the 540, which is the firearm, other parts don't mean sh!t. Receiver = 540.
Receiver = 540.

Clear?

OP, Classic Green/Black Special are excellent rifles, I highly recommend them.
