What the heck just happened!

I was out firing my m14/polytech today, and as the "last" case ejected, I saw a black piece fly out with the case. Upon inspection, my extractor and ejector has parted company with the gun and shot out to who knows where on the range. I'm guessing that there is a retaining pin holding all of this into the gun that let loose.
Has anyone else had this happen? The bolt itself is not effected at all.
Where is the cheapest, and most hassel free place to get replacement parts? Does anyone have scematics of the bolt so I can properly determine the parts that are missing? Does anyone have installation instructions?
All usefull help would be appreciated.

I heard of it before. the extractor is retained by the extractor spring plunger so you will need the extractor,extractor spring and the little plunger also. Should be installation procedure somewhere here, the m14 experts will came in soon, i'm sure. A bolt dissassembly tool is very helpful but not absolutly required. Marstar should have replacement parts or maybe fews m14 gurus here.

Same thing happened to me with a brand new Springfield.
Sounds like you need an extractor,ejector and spring and maybee an extractorspring and detent.
A empty 30.06 shell casing works great for assembling the bolt.Just make sure when you get it back together the extractor stem is not protruding below flush on your bolt or it could happen again.
Brownwlls will have the parts but I would seek a USGI or Italian made extractor in lieu of the SA cast unit that Brownells sells.
I had posted a write up on how to assemble the bolt with a empty 30.06 case in the past.
 
I had the same happen on a US Rifle M1 Garand. I took it to the local gunsmith and was surprised it was only a $30 to $40 bill to repair. Saved the hassle of searching for parts, ordering, and DIY repair.
 
Thanks guys; I'm hoping that this never happens again when I get it repaired, but I'll buy spare parts just in case it does :) I must have budged the pin when I cleaned it prior to taking it out to the range this time, and just not noticed.

Just an update....I ordered the parts a while ago from one of the sponsors on this site, and haven't seen hide nor hair of them. I'm now just thinking that I'm going to send my bolt off to Dlask, have them replace the parts, and see if they can be staked in so that this never happens again.

The guys at dlask are NOT schooled in riflesmithing the m14. They have done excellent service work for cutting and crownin/threading m14 and other firearm barrels and have their version of the gas lock site. I'm not sayin that to knock them, I consider them friends. There is nothing a gunsmith can do for you save replacing the parts with new parts. There is no method to "stake" these parts in place.
I would order a wolfe extractor spring. Not sure where you are gonna find a new extractor detent as brownells doesn't have them. I think, take off chinese, take off usgi or perhaps 7.62firearms might have em.

Yes, it has happened to me and my M1A... then also to my TRW Made USGI M14... way back in 1993 and 1995. I always keep spare bolt innards. This is not new for the M14 designed rifle!

It's just the geometry of the rim of the cartridge KICKING upwards in the final half of it's travel INTO the chamber and the bolt face being immediately behind... picture the rim of the case prying UPWARDS on the extractor. There ya go!
