Could I hunt with a XCR? If so, what’s the best caliber?

Hello all, this is probably a noob question, but could use a Robinson XCR for hunting? If so, what caliber should I look at getting?

Awesome, thanks guys. So I get the XCR 6.8 spc. What type of scope should I look at getting for it?

I'd go for an XCR-M in .308. It's the lightest I'd take for moose or bison...

Scope? Once again, it depends on the ranges and shooting conditions of you hunt....and what you can afford. Any good quality 3-9x with a high-viz reticle would be my choice.

Thanks :) That helps a great deal.

Ya... Get one!... Actually no, you have to wait for them.

And they are delayed... And they are a new product...

No offence to Robinson but I will wait for a few folks to buy and try before I will lay down my money, I love my XCR but first generation rifles are always glitchy hence why a lot of people were soured on the XCR-L, when it came out it had issues but Robinson worked hard to correct them, it still left a lot of early buyers who paid a lot of money with a bad taste in there mouth to this day...

Either buy the newest 6.8spc XCR or wait at least 6 months till the reviews of the XCR-M start flooding in... But hey that's just one mans opinion here

308 is the lightest I's use as well, and I have used it on each.

That said, the regular short action XCR is by no means a light rifle, and the -M will be even heavier. These things don't lend themselves to hunting, but if you want to pack a bunch of gun, x39 and 6.8 will work on deer, though I would prefer a 308-sized cartridge.

I use mine in 6.8 for hunting. 7.62X39 works too but 6.8 is a lot flatter shooting, only thing I don't use it for is Elk, it would do it but would have to be fairly close. I am man enough to admit I don't think I want to see a good Elk at distance, and not be carrying enough gun.

An XCR-L 6.8 SPC delivers the same kind of performance as a 243 Win.
With a good bullet (110gr TSX) it will kill a deer cleanly at short-medium range (maybe 250-300m).

I had to look up what it was, haha. That's a 12lb gun. Add a scope, mount, strap, load the clip and let's call it 16lbs even.

My suggestion would be to keep that one as a toy, and buy yourself a 350.00 6.5lb 30-06 or something like that. I suspect you'd be a lot happier, and more successful in your hunts.

I only posted this as I saw your other thread about being a new hunter. That xcr is way too heavy to be a practical hunting rifle IMO.

I have hunted for 2 years with my XCR-L in 6.8SPC I have shot 2 mule deer with it both were DRT.

My plinking load = 110gr Sierra Prohunters @ 2650fps these are the least expensive bullets available for reloading they are very accurate my only issue with them is they are designed for 270 Win velocities and will not expand below 2300fps in soft tissue = 125 yard shots on game for me.

The 110gr TSX are not designed to expand below 2000fps so once again these are not a 250 + yard bullet they will most likely not expand and pencil thru a deer at those ranges.

My hunting everything bullet is a 95gr Tipped TSX these are designed to expand in soft tissue to below 1700fps with a 2825fps muzzle velocity and due to the accuracy I get from these loads I would not hesitate to take a lung/chest shot on deer @ 300 - 350 yards or coyotes out to 450 yards.

I am hearing very good things about the new Hornady 120gr SST's and either the 100gr or 110gr Accubonds these are designed to expand in soft tissue down to 1800fps if I were try out the Accubonds I would go with the higher BC 110gr with a muzzle velocity of 2650fps this would also be a 300 yard deer combo.

I have a Leupold 30mm tube VX111 4.5-14X40mm side focus Varmint reticle scope mounted with Leupold PRW rings.
