I read a magazine (need to check which one it was) that did a review of the Precision Sniper Rifle submission from a small firearms company in .338 Norma Mag. The author was able to get an 8" group at either 1200 or 1500 yds.

I have not seen anyone using this round here, can anyone give me more information on it, particularly reloading information? Images of your setups with this round would be cool too. :)

Cheers,
Sean

Well I know Steven Segal is using it and he says he's getting head shots at 1800m with it so it must be awesome...;) .

funny, I just was surprised by the review that it was more accurate than the 338lm (at least by that author) and no one here was talking about it.

Is there a bias against this round?

The article is in Special Weapons magazine, the December edition. The rifle is a MGSS Unlimited Precision Rifle. The author used Black Hills ammunition and shot a 4.45" group at 1200yds and an 8.25" group at 1500yds.

The only "flaw" in 338 Lapua Mag was that it was designed for 250gr SMK while 338 Norma Mag was designed for 300gr SMK.
The difference probably only shows up at ranges of 1200m+ and is not a real issue for civilian users but is one for military users.

The cartridge's commercial viability depends on it being selected for US Army next generation sniping cartridge. History is littered with excellent but forgotten experimental cartridges: 276 Peterson, 280 British, 6mm SAW...

I have looked into it actually I want the 300 Norma mag. The 338 seems to be a great round mag feed with 300gn bullets a similar case design to those already proven accurate (think 6mm ppc). The major/prohibitive stumbling block is the brass. There is none available here, check out the number of US retails that are saying out of stock; then call around here no one seems to carry it few have even heard of it.. the typical response it to talk about the 308 Norma mag. For that reason alone if you’re looking for 338 get the lapua for now than when the Norma round becomes more commercial you can rebarrel to that chambering.

IIRC the base cartridge is a .416 Rigby, could you not fire form some from that??? Keep in mind I know pretty much bupkis about reloading.

Can supply brass and reloading dies and components.

338 and 308 Norma mag brass has been reinforced and the alloy changed to handle high pressure loading.

The orig 416 Rigby case is a low pressure design making it a poor choice in this application. yes, you can wildcat rigby Hrn and other makes but you would be better off just modifying 338 LM brass.

There is no way to use orig Rigby brass without a whole lot of wildcatting. Same goes for the 338LM

Sounds like an interesting cartridge designed for shorter mag feed performance and the 300gr MK.

Same design concept has created the 6.5 Creedmore as a "better" chambering to the 260Rem in very short 308 mags

Ultimately, the larger case will offer more performance AND any lack of accuracy due to a "deep seated bullet" is more in the mind of the writer then on paper.

With the massive growth in interest for the 338LM, mags will soon grow to suit and this Norma will be a very interesting but little used chambering.

See i rest my case i was talking about the 300 norma mag which is the .30 cal version of the 338 NM both are based off of the 416 rigby case. And the 308 norma get the press which is a cartridge based on the .300 H&H.

P.S.

But good on you if you can get the brass for the 338 or 300 Norma Mag it is expensive. he is the only one i have heard of.
