Damage from corrosive ammo?

Does anyone have any pictures of damage caused by corrosive ammo?

Has anyone actually witnessed a barrel that has been ruined by it?

I hear lots of third-hand stories of what will happen if you don't go directly home and flush your barrel with hot water. But I've never seen a first-hand example.

I forgot to clean my 858 after one outing. I had a million things on the go, and completely forgot. I was cleaning all my guns a couple months ago and the barrel had a lot of rust on it. It was mostly fuzz, and after a good cleaning, the barrel shows no signs of pitting.

I had a similar experience with a SKS. The rust was very minor and just wiped off with oil but it did send a message that I need to take more care in the future. One big thing to consider is that regardless of the type of ammo you fire it still needs moisture for corrosion to begin. The only reason my SKS started to corrode is that the humidity level in my basement during the summer is really high. The corrosive salts from the ammo I was using just gave the corrosion process a boost to get started. I'm sure that if my storage area wasn't so humid that my rifle would have been just fine.

i fired about 100 rds thru my sks and my cz in late october and just cleaned them yesterday. no rust at all my locker has no dehumdifier just toss in packs of silica dessicant whenever i find some. i ran a dry patch thru just to see if there was any red or brown and nothing just soot. after a good cleaning they shine again and i don't say this to brag im an idiot for not cleaning them earlier but as the saying goes #### happened. and i am very glad there was no damage. i also have gone a week before with no cleaning and a few hundred rounds through them and no rust then either but i live in the okanagan its almost a desert here. so i wouldn't worry too too much about it keep em dry if you dont have time to clean them right away i wonder if just a shot of oil down the bore and in the gas block would keep rust at bay. really the corrosive stuff should only be in the bore and the gas block.

i am served in Red Army for 2yrs and never (NEVER)was told to do any special cleaning for AK-just regular gun oil and brushes. And my AK was shiny and clean all times(or my butt will be kicked hard by corporal )/Lots of elbow grease))

Yeah, that's what I keep hearing. But have you actually seen it happen to a rifle?

Yes, I have. First was an old SKS that I left for 24 hrs during the summer when it was humid. The gas tube and piston had pits in the surface, tho the chromed bbl was untouched. Its also happened with my CZ in the bore. I thought I would be cheap and just clean the powder fouling and leave the copper until it got bad. The layers of copper fouling trapped powder residue underneath so no matter how heavily I oiled it, it kept developing a little rust after a few days. There was an SKS-D that a member (drewz?) posted pictures of. It had been left uncleaned for a long time and was very badly pitted all over. It was horrid.

If you bet rust on your rifle like the rust on the above 45 gallon barrel, you have waited too long to clean it. The only problem I encountered with the corrosive ammo and not cleaning within a few days was the firing pin siezed up in the bolt. took it out, cleaned it, no lasting effects.

Rust.

I've use corrosive ammo in all my x39 guns and a few others. Rust will form but it's not as bad as cgn and other site's posters will tell you. If you shoot an un cleaned gun it knocks any corrosion out.

f:P:

Pics of a gun barrel, not a drum.

We all know what rust looks like, at least us Ford owners do.:D

Everybody knows if you don't clean it while firing, corrosive ammo it will rust up and it will be non functional before you leave the range.
Used CLP on everything and regular cleaning methods, never a problem.

I owned a chinese SKS it was my first SKS i had it for almost 20 years. i just traded it last year to a fellow CGN'r and i shot the crated ammo out of it all the time, i never even knew about corrosive salt primers until i joined this forum  i cleaned my rifle but i never ever worried about racing home and cleaning and i never ever ran windex or hot water or anything like that down it! When i traded it it was just as nice as the day i bought it????

Hi Coolzak,
I bet you have some interesting Stories!! Did you use the SKS at all while serving in the Army or only the AK-47...hopefully someday maybe we can get the AK here even if it is as a restricted.
