That is the "Distractor". A lesser known feature of the 1911's that was developed by, and for, the high capacity mag crowd from an existing implement commonly known as a "Quick Release" used with Bows. Their misguided belief is that the smaller capacity magazines of the 1911's are somehow inadequate and require the use of a "Distractor". The theory is that once your mag is empty, you throw the the "Distractor" at your assailant to confuse/distract them while you are reloading.

Personally, I've never seen the need to carry one, and prefer to leave mine in my Bow Case and use it as a Quick Release like it was orignally intended to be used

Not sure of the technical name but its uses by archers to drawn the string back on a bow and arrow. The string clips in in the part at the bottom of the picture. When you push the button on the left it releases the string. The idea is that it releases more cleanly than allowing it to roll off your fingers for better accuracy

Called a release aid. Similar in principle to the "Carter Insatiable" model I use for target and I use a "Carter One Shot" for hunting but. I'm not familiar with the one pictured so I'm 'guessing' when I say it may be in a more level entry category but I'm not sure. Just guessing.

Again....
What the hell?

What is the name of this "object" and what is it used for???

as I alluded to in my post, it is a "Quick Release" used in bow hunting. You use it to pull the string back, then the trigger on it is depressed to relase (shoot). Does make it slightly easier to pull the string, and less wear on the fingers during release.

The better styles of them have a strap attached to them that circles the shooters wrist, allowing the person to use their entire arm to pull, rahter than reying strictly on finger strength.

Might be but to the best of my knowledge, they're defined or classified as a "Release Aid". Try a google check.
