A little background on my rifle. This is a Savage model 10 predator hunter max-1 in .204 ruger. This is the third .204 I have owned. I ordered this rifle in March this year. It took until September to get it. I got it out to the range and had a terrible time getting it to group. ie. not staying on 8x11 paper at 100 yards (or about 12" groups). New scope on top mounted with a farrell 1 piece base. This was my first savage with the accustock and I figured I may have not torqued it properly, or something was touching where it shouldn't. Played with the action screws to no avail. Nothing seemed out of order. Changed scope to no avail. Tried 4 different factory loads and 2 different hand loads. I Got it down to 5" groups with the odd flyer way off target. Still horrible accuracy. The last thing I checked was the muzzle crown. Holy FCUK how did this thing ever leave the factory:confused: Im pretty sure they used a ball peen hammer to "cut" the crown.
I am pretty disappointed with quality control at Savage and now I know why this is a "specialty series" rifle.
I am looking for advice on what channels I should go through to get this repaired. I tried emailing but all I here from Savage is crickets. Couldnt get anyone on the phone for savage Canada, and I was second in line at Savage for 2 hours.
Here are some pics.

And I drew some lines so you can see the problem areas (Its tough to get pics of a .20 cal barrel.)

Still glad I didn't buy Reminton :p

You have to call Savage in Canada. They deal with your problem and then they call Savage in the states.

Normally Savage is speedy with repairs.

Good luck.

This is not a big problem. They just overlook to crown it. You can fix it yourself in 10 min by lightly deburring it first and then laping it with a drill, round head brass screw and liberal amount of fine valve grinding paste. It's just that easy....

I had the exact same problem with the same model rifle in 223. My dealer contacted Savage and I had a complete new rifle in my hands in 2 weeks at zero cost to me, not even shipping. IMO excellent service. The 2nd rifle shot MOA with no problems.

This gent posted an issue with his Savage in the "Precision Rifle" forum, and you suggest he re-crown it himself using a drill?..........Lmfao. Take it to a gunsmith and have it done properly, on a lathe, or do nothing at all.

Doesn't each savage have to pass an accuracy test at the factory? I thought I read wheere each gun gets 3 shots at an indoor range at 100 YARDS. Actually thought i saw it on guns n ammo tv.

In most cases you can do a better job with the brass screw+ grinding compound than a lathe. This barrel has more issues than crown. Looks like chatter marks in the last inch or more, and that's what we can see. Needs to go back.

The dealer you got it from should be dealing with this. As soon as he saw these pics a new rifle should have been in the mail. Mark

If you look at the last inch of the barrel there is some serious issues. There are 2 lands that meet with the groove to give you a smooth bore on 1/3 the barrel. I tried to mark where it looks like one of the lands was squished flat the last 1/4".
I bought the gun at frontier firearms and cannot say enough good stuff about them. Before I took the pictures I talked with them about what to do. Since the problem I have was only hear say at that point they put me in contact with Savage Canada. I have had issues getting in contact with them. They have been closed for the holidays, and if you follow there commands for warranty issues and press 0 the line disconnects lol. It took me 7 months to get this rifle in the first place and am scared how long it would take to fix/replace.
I just hope its not this time next year when I get it back.

My girlfriend had issues with a Savage rimfire. They sent her another one after about a month. Tested that one and it had the same problem. She asked if she could change the gun. She paid the difference and got a m12 benchrest in 6br. Again took about a month. But Savage USA sent her the wrong gun first. :HR:

So, you're saying that she had (2) defective rimfires and then they sent her the wrong replacement rifle before they got it right on the 4th. rifle sent to her?

Sounds like these guys were running the show:

Yeah first bought a 93R17 BSEV. After paying a good amount of money on a Savage rimfire she had high hopes. It really didn’t shoot that well. The crown was tapered off center. It was also splitting the cases.

She sent that back and got another. Same thing. Junky crown and splitting cases again. (I have a 93R17 BRJ and mine seems to have no problem and the crown is center to the bore) She sent her 2nd one back and paid for the m12. They sent her a gun that Savage doesn’t even list on the site. It was a M12 LRPV with a box mag in 6BR 1-12 twist. (I wanted to buy it but didn't have the cash at the time) She sent that one back and then they sent the one she wanted. Took about 4 months I guess.

+1 Any reputable company (Savage is one of those), will be more than happy to fix such a problem, especially new from the factory.

Put your tools away, pull out the patience, and just have it taken care of properly direct from Savage.

This happened to 2 of my shooting friends in the last 3 months...Bad crown and was fixed with warranty...

How can a cie like Savage let go some target rifle like that????

Just amazing...

I've only had to deal with Savage on magazine issues and too short of action screws (ordered longer ones but they sent the wrong ones)....for two different rifles. One phone call each time...no more than 10 minutes...and new stuff in the mailbox within 8 buisness days!!...One of thee best customer service companies to deal with IMHO! Have a little patience..it'll pay off.

I think he meant to use a crown refinishing tool and so lapping compound in a drill, you can find a demo of it midway usa's YouTube channel.

Bottom line, drills and drill operated crowning tools don`t belong anywhere near a precision rifle. If you can find a professional who disagrees with me, i would encourage them to speak out so I can avoid using their services in the future.

Looks like they never cut enough off the crown end of the bbl. if you have no luck with savage, I will cut and recrown at no charge. I am sure savage will take care of you though.

Cheers
