Well I agree that I wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of a buttstroke from a mosin. The way the buttplate focuses energy on that radius near the top I do not doubt it would crack my skull.
Olympia, if you search around you'll find legions of Mosin owners that have adjusted or replaced the front sight post. It's by far the first and most common mod to allow these old guns to be aimed and shot effectively. Remember that the Russian combat doctrine called for the bayonet to be fixed in place at all times when in battle or to or from battle.
