Like the title says I am ordering a new barrel and have it narrowed down to .223 It will be a prefit savage and will be 8 twist varmit contour. This rifle will shoot 75gr-80gr weights at distances up to 1000y off a bench or bipod and wont be mag fed. Now the things I haven't decided on are length, 26", 28", 30"? And what chamber is best suited to the longer bullets. I was thinking of going with the wylde chamber as it will have a longer throat and I could get better use of case volume. Any thoughts?

I have a 30 inch MacClennen, 1:8" twist with a .223 Wylde chamber. Shoot 80 gr bullets just fine out to 1000 yards.

I would suggest you get a 1/7 twist at 30.5" finnished to be able to shoot the 80 & the 90gr VLD Bergers to 1000
if you use a Wylde 223 reamer you will have to get throat lenghtened to shoot the 90
vld but they are much better than the 80s in the wind .551 BC vs .445BC for the 80s vld.
With a the 80s in my 30" barrel 2920fps, the 90 vld 2800fps I can drive them faster but accuracy seems to fall off

you life in merrit and are talking about shoot 223 out to 1000 yards and want guidance? Time to talk to jerry from mystic precision.. that guy is a wealth of knowledge.

Already have, and yes Jerry is where I'm getting the barrel. Just thought I'd try to get responses from others as well. The experience on this site goes very deep and I value the opinons here.

Might as well throat it for the 90's if you want to shoot to 1000.

That might be a future build for sure but right now I want something I can get shooting well without playing to much. The bergers as I understand are a little finicky. Also, the main goal of this build is cheap practice, and the price per round goes up a fair bit with the 90gr bullets.

I have a 1-7 select match in stock that will finish at 27" if you don't want the long wait of ordering a prefit from Shilen. I can custom throat to your bullet choice.
Savage s8 bull contour.

Cheers

Thanks for the offer but the bull contour wont work with the stock. just out of curiosity though, do have a machine shop and the ability to chamber and thread barrels?

I use 26 gr of Varget and 80 gr Noslers. I load for accuracy and don't care what the velocity is. All I know is it works very well out to 1000 yards.

Thanks Maynard. I know accuracy is the goal and I won't chose a load simply because it is fast if there is an accuracy node that is a little slower. At the same time though, to slow and I'll look for something else that works better.

Well then an 8" twist barrel, throated for the 75gr A-Max would fit the bill perfectly. You're not gonna find LR match-grade bullets any cheaper that are more suitable for 1000 yards.

Ok, well I've decided to go with a 28" Krieger in 8 twist throated for the 75 amax. Did you guys know North Shore offers prefit Kriegers!:agree:w:h:
