I am interested in the Elcan Specter DR 1x4 to mount on a .308 LMT, any thoughts ? Am I missing the point of the .308 and leaving myself short on the magnification.

I have an LMT 308 and I have tried it with the 1-4X Spectre DR, I can tell you that you will want more optic. I run mine with the 1.5-6X, and it works awesome. shoot me a pm if you have any questions.

The higher magnification scopes work well for the 24" barrelled AR 308 rifles.

Keep in mind the OP most likely has the standard LMT MWS with the 16" CL barrel. So less magnification might be better overall. The New Zealand DM version LMT with 18" SS has 4-14x I believe.

I built mine with a 16.250" long heavy match barrel, so far am getting sub 3/4moa from it, but until I get a chance to work up the best loads and then stretch the distance out a LOT further won't be able to tell just how capable these really can be. So far it looks very promising hence the desire for more glass.

Cool. The 308 AR rifles are my favourite overall. I like the AR15 but the AR10 is just better.

I know some of the results with the 16" SS LMT rifles have been fairly spectacular as well. Questar posted some results a ways back on their dealer thread. I have a LMT with the 16" CL barrel but have swapped it out for the 20" SS one. I'm going to be grabbing the Conquest off my DPMS for that rifle. 6.5-20x 50mm. Later I'll look at a Sightron SIII either 6-24x or 8-32x to put on the DPMS. At least that's the plan for now.

That is what I plan to install on my LR308. Currently it has a 3.5x15 NF on it but I feel the 5.5x22 would be a better option, so will be upgrading when we get more scopes in.

Rick I am with you on this one, traded off all my 3.5-15's for 5.5-22's.. No regrets. the 3.5 -5.5 low end debate it moot to me. either a 1-10 or 5- however high you can go is pretty much what belongs on the 308

All the high end manufacturers are figuring this out and coming out with 1-8's or 1.x-10's.

Look to Leupold's new Mk6 3-18. It will be publically unveiled at shot -- I have a few (well maybe a few more than few). Same length as their Mk8 CQBSS.

It is an awful lot of scope in a small package - and MSRP and actually sale price is really reasonable (expected selling price was to be around $1800 USD)

I don't know, you better take me with you to the SHOT Show so I can report back here with pics. ;)

I'm running the same setup on the same rifle.

I originally tried a 5.56 unit on a C7 (picture above). It is a great optic but overkill on a 5.56 rifle. In 5.56 it's really meant to be used on the C9/SAW.

The Brits are using a Trijicon equivalent 6X optic on the LMT MWS that was originally specified for the MAG58 GPMG. Rather than buy a dedicated optic, they apparently just used the surplus ones they had for the MWS.

Seriously, you have to think about what you do before buying the right optic. Combat sights like Elcan and ACOG are great if you need to move fast, shoot fast and be ready to adjust holdover with the etched BDC. They are uncomplicated with minimum requirement in external ballistic knowledge and they are not designed for super precision. You can potentially spot and correct for yourself so it is good that they have huge FOV.

If you know your ballistics pretty well and need some precision, a real "scope" is probably a better choice. How far are you shooting at? Remember, once the range passes 500m, bullets start dropping like a rainbow. If you have a laser range finder or other tools, it is probably better to be able to dial in wind and exact elevation needed (or use the mildots). If you have to shoot at moving targets, it will be easier to be able to dial in all these adjustments. On the other hand, your rifle is going to be much heavier.

to the OP..
Im not sure where you are in BC, but if your in the lower mainland PM me. i will be taking my LMT 308 with the Elcan 1.5-6X and a few other rifles with the Elcan 1-4X to the range in the next week or so, and your more than welcme to check them out.
