Received a 91/30 last night and jumped on it right away. First thing I noticed.... WHAT A COMPLICATED BOLT!!!!(first time taking it apart) First time owner of a Mosin on top of that. The receiver is a hex and its stamped 1926. My understanding is that its a ''updated'' Dragoon. The stock is a bit beat up but overall in good shape. The shelak is coming of just with my fingernail..... The action in somewhat hard to close with a round chambered. Does not seem like a headspace problem since it feels like a snag. Only one part of the bolt movement is hard and then its easy to close. opens no problem. The other thing I noticed is how loose the action feels when you are pulling the trigger. Then again its a under 200$ rifle. I want to see how this thing shoots....
What are your experiences with this rifle?

Any pics? finding a Dragoon at your first attempt, well, I can say that is really good luck! :)
By any chance, is there a small rectangle with SA letters in it on the left side of the barrel root, just above the wood line?.

i have a hex reciever mosin and i shot it for the frist time today. bolt is very stiff compared to my m44. on some rounds i could not close the bolt even when using alot of force. after 60 rounds i gave up on her, brought her home cleaned her and put her in the safe. she shoots low and to the right. doesent group bad if i do my part. nice rifles, very classy!
 
Damn Angry, That sucks. I hope I dont run into that problem. The bore is nice and shiny on this one and I saw a video about the bolt sticking on these on youtube. Gonna have to see when I get to the range.
 
The resistance closing the bolt on a cartridge is the extractor trying to snap over the round. It can be rounded out so the angle is less and improve function.

Quite often there are only two causes for this - overly thick rims on the ammo (very common with Albanian surplus), or the extractor is bent in towards the firing pin hole too much.

Yes, they are bit sloppy but they work.

Most of the rifles I own are Mosins - mainly Finnish, but with a smattering of Soviet and Polish examples thrown in. When you shoot yours, be sure to shoot a few strings with the bayonet attached, and some without. M91/30s were sighted at the factory with the bayonet attached - it can make a big difference to PoI and group size.

Try a few different types of ammo to see what shoots best. I shot handloads to get the best accuracy out of mine, and save the surplus ammo for close range Club Practical Shooting Events.
 
The chamber itself could also be suffering from cosmoline buildup. Sometimes the chamber isn;t cleaned out so well, and after a few firings with that grease still inside, it ends up basically shellacking the bore and reducing it's diameter by a bit, making for a headache.

There's a video floating around here somewhere with a dead easy way to clean it up...
 
So I finally got my Westrifle Mosin to the range today. I fired 5 rounds of MFS SP 203 grain ammo and was not too sure what was going to happen.The trigger pull is very long and creepy so I have to contribute that to the first shot being about 4 inches low from the rest. The following 4 shots were under 2 inches apart and 7 inches high and 7 inches to the right from point of aim. Needless to say I think I got my $130 worth. I am going to remove the front sight block and then remove the front sight pin. I understand that this is done by using a hollow drift punch and then taping it out from the top. I'll turn the pins shoulder to allow the pin to sit higher and perhaps I'll slim it down as well. I would really like to clean that trigger pull up as well. There is another thread that showed some good steps so I think that they will be taken as well. Should be interesting to see what I can get out of the old girl.

I got some FMJ rounds from MFS. Gonna try those eventually.

Funny you mention that. I tried that when I found out about the problem and the first thing that came to mind is the extractor. I dont think I will play with it any time soon. I want to see how this thing shoots.

I have put 100 rounds of the MFS through my Mosin Sniper Repro, and it was quite nice actually. Fist size group at 130, and I am no sniper (just have some of their gear!), lots of room for improvement. Also, you can't really beat the price for non-corrosive, which my rifle will never shoot.
 
I am at work and on my lunch I decided to take the extractor out and try sand it a bit. still no luck. I do not want to sand it down too much and end up taking the shells out by hand.... Any1 have any ideas on how to properly get rid of the bolt closing on the round a bit hard?
 
So I took it to the range sunday. 50 Yards. -15C but with double the clothes it was nice.
I do have to say it does kick more then the mauser.
Not bad for first time?
