I just got my first and doubt my last, SKS ;) First I have to say I am Very Impressed !!! I can't believe the quality for such a cheap firearm. Definitely a bargain. I hope the dealers don't see this and up the price. One question I have is how do you remove the wood hand guard from the gas tube ? Seems very solid. I ordered a different laminated stock that I'm going to play with and wanted to put a metal hand guard on the rifle. I'll post more pics when done.

The ferrule has a tapered pin that holds the wood to the gas tube. I've been trying to get mine off for a week now. I need a better vice or another set of hands.

Here is a link to another site, that has a modified C clamp to remove the pin.

Thanks,That's what I was kinda thinking. I'll go give it a shot.

It was very tight. I just used a small broken drill bit that I cut down for a punch. I think you just need someone to hold it against a solid edge while you punch it out. Thanks, Jack PS. I just found a tapered pin in my cleaning kit, about 3.25" I suspect that's what it's for.

That punch I believe is primarily used to take the bolt apart...or you can use the fat end to flip up the assembly required to remove the gas tube. Either way it comes in very handy come cleaning time. I use it to knock the pins out of my SR-22 too.

The pin is also a T handle when the cleaning rod is assembled.
The selling price of these rifles is unrelated to their actual cost.
Consider the Cdn. retail. What do you think the Ukrainians are getting for each unit?

I had to use a 2.5 # hammer and pound the crap out of the pin to get it out. Its a good thing choate gives you another pin with their stock because my pin was destroyed in the process of removing it. That c-clamp idea is brilliant. Wish I thought of it.

Also you can VERY GENTLY drill the expanded end just enough to make it easier to remove. Since the new guards (usually) come with a pin you can destroy the old one taking it out.
