I want to buy an Eotech 512 b/c I can get one for a great price. It will be my first sight ever for a 14.5" AR. I have looked a lot at the Aimpoint VS. Eotech stuff and I still like the look of the Eotech. Is there anything I should know about the 512 or are they all the same?
Thanks

I went with a 512 after a while of researching, it was an impulse buy to be frank, but I love it.
the 512 is very similar to another Eotech model without the night vision capability. (and a little less depth for the water resistance IIRC)

one fellow in the link below said it best:

I also had no need for NV, so I went with the 512. As far as the submersion, if I'm 10 feet under water and still holding onto my rifle, something has gone terribly awry and I don't think an extra 23 feet is going to matter to me. YMMV

the 512 has controls on the rear as apposed to the 552 (side)
if you plan on running a magnifier, a side control system might be best, as illustrated by the link below

Please do not buy based on looks alone. the aim point is a magnificent sight (own one as well). reticle on the eotech is great for fast target acquisition. some will tell you you need the 50,000 hour battery life on the aimpoint vs the 5000 hrs on the eotech, again YMMV.

hope this helps a little bit!

Yeah it helps, I just want some feedback from owners. As far as battery life goes, it's a range toy so a few hours at a time is all I need. Price wise Eotech's are a bit cheaper since you don't have to buy a mount, especially the 512.

It takes AA Battery's so who really cares about battery life? Go to the dollar store. For $2 you have enough juice for 2 years...

I have a 14.5'' AR and I originally wanted to put a 512 on it but instead went with the XPS2. Ir runs on a single battery with a simplified battery housing/cap, which is good, I guess? But the biggest thing for me was the reduced overall length of XPS2 over the 512. With a rear MBUS and the XPS2 there still isn't much space left on the rail which might be an issue if I wanted to run a magnifier as well, but I don't so its fine. With a 512 there would be no room at all for the Mag.

I have always liked the look of EOtech sights and when I first saw the XPS2 I wasn't to impressed with the new look, but it did grow on me and now the XPS2 will be the only sight I put on my AR.

Good Luck!
