Questions for you rifle guys.. UPDATE POST #42. ORDER CANCELED!

So I went to pick up my gun today, i asked for this guy to install the scope with flip caps etc... and to bore sight it for me as i dont have any of that equipment.

I get there and to start he doesnt even know who i am, which is fine they are busy. I told him and he said yes the gun is right here. So i take it out and have a look and notice the flip caps are not on the scope, so i ask him and he forgot, so he proceeds to get them and put them on.

As he is screwing them on, i noticed that the scope moved in the rings, i hold it up and take a look and sure enough the cross hairs are half sideways. I tell him the scope shouldnt move in the rings like that.

So he proceeds to try to tighten them up to no avail. I said well thats not good, do you have another set or different kind of rings here we can use. He says no.

He then says i know a trick to fix this and starts to unscrew the rings, i said whats the trick. He says ya use a bit of electrical tape on the rings.

I said you want me to pay over 2500 bux for a gun and scope and your using electrical tape to get the scope on properly?

He said well if you dont like it we can cancel this right now. I said ok i will and I walked out lol.

I should have known better then to trust a local business up here , they dont care some dumb fuk will walk in right behind me and buy that im sure.

Sounds like he was using 30mm rings on a 1 inch tube.

Well that guy actually owns the business, and his wife was sitting there too listening to this. To top it off he was hungover, he admitted that to me as he said he was tired cause he was up tell 400 in the morning playing cards. Ill never step foot inside that place again i can tell you that. I stopped buying ammo there cause he overcharged, i should have known better.
 
That is very unfortunate. As the large box store outfits take over the market the smaller outfits are getting squeezed out. I'm sure that most gunnutz would rather patronize a local shop than going to the big outfits. However, in order to justify a small ( not a large gouge ) price difference the local fellow has to provide quality service and knowledge.

Sounds like this fellow has had things a bit too easy. If he does not change he won't be in business for too much longer. All he had to do was say sorry let me try another ( proper size ) of rings and you would of been happy and probably of given him more business.

BTW anyone who is hung over or has been drinking should not be any where near this line of work. Have your party but when you walk into the gun shop have your head on straight.

Well its a case of being the only game in town. The guy mostly sells outdoor gear, the firearms part of it is just something he likes to do, but trying to put electrical tape on a 2500 gun to make the scope fit the rings was a bit much. He wont see my business again.
 
You dodged a bullet there. Sako's are the worst rifle in the 2000ish dollar category in my mind. I'd look long and hard for a semi-custom Model 700/Model 70 before I paid full price for Finnlite .300 WM :eek:

Nice scope, craptastic rifle. If you're gonna spend 2000$ call Guntech or someone and see what they have for a tuned up stainless Model 700 or some such thing laying around!

There was nothing wrong with what i picked out, did you even read the thread? Its not my first rifle either, i already own a Browning Lever action in 30 06.

No worries, ill stick with the Browning BLR i have in 30 06. Im more of a hand gun guy but wanted a second rifle, however the one I have is good enough for the amount of hunting i do.
 
What a bummer but I think you did the right thing.

If he was gonna use electrical tape on scope mounts who knows what else he does with the rest of his products.


A buddy of mine has a Sako 85 in .270, a beautiful gun. However I think you made the right move with this deal.
 
It's too bad you had a poor experience, but Alberta has some great gun shops so have a look around! Like Cub says, you might use the time best putting some more research time into your choice as well. One idea is to go to the range with one or two of your pals that have an assortment of calibers, and brands. Try them out and you will get a better idea as to what you like and what you don't. Winter is a great time for sales too, and if you put some time in hefting rifles at the gun shops, your pal's rifles as well as some trigger time, you will eventually come up with your own opinion of what'll work best for you as a shooter. Half the fun of buying a rifle for me is the research and contemplation that goes into the caliber as well as the model and brand - not to mention where I can find it on sale!! There's some great deals in the EE as you know, for example - this one's a smoker: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=645590&highlight=icon . It's a 24 inch barrel, wood and heavy - all the things that you think you don't want, but how do you know for sure if you don't try?

As far as Archie's dislike of Sako's I would have to disagree. 2k's steep for sure, but WSO has them on sale for $1400 right now...

As strange as it may seem, his prices on some guns are lower than most other places. Instead of adding a percentage of the cost to each gun, he adds a fixed amount to each gun, be it a $500 gun or a $2500 gun. The result being that his prices are on the high side for lower priced guns, and on the low side for higher priced guns.
I am however surprised at the poor service that you received, although he is by no means a gunsmith, he usually provides good customer service.

As to why Fort Mcmurray has no specialty hunting or fishing stores, it's because although the wages are high here, we have a lot of people that will not support a small business if they can save a small amount of money at Walmart or Canadian Tire. We have had three hunting stores since I have been here, and it was nice having reloading supplies available locally, as well as a good assortment of guns and ammunition. I gladly paid an extra $3 per pound of powder or $1 for 100 primers, to buy them locally, but too many people won't.
 
As all can see I reside in the same town as the OP . I drive 5 hours and would even pay twice as much rather than deal with the owner of the store mentioned becuase of a similiar experience of poor service and not caring about it. Everyone I know in town feels the same
