The Ruger Hawkeye Compact looks like it would be a light compact bush gun and I particularly like the stainless laminated stock version. I haven't seen these listed for sale anywhere I've looked. Does anyone know anything about these rifles and/or know a retailer who stocks them. I did a search here but didn't find much about them.

Great rifles for carrying in the bush, I bought one for my wife but tend to steal it if I'm going walking and don't feel the need for a bigger rifle. Ours is in 308win, I'm planning to work up some 220gr loads for it as bear/moose ammo for under 100m.

Lightweight is not the first thing that comes to mind when talking a laminate stock.
IIRC mine was weighing in a hair over 7lbs with the Leupold 4X.
If a lightweight walking rifle is your only criteria, theres better choices out there IMHO, and I`ve owned and carried many including customs.

I bought mine from wholesale sports, I enjoyed the rifle but it was butt-heavy which made my off-hand shooting suffer. I ran a few handload combos across my chronograph and was a bit disappointed in the velocities. A goodly amount of muzzle flash and flip, but it never bothered me.
These are crazy short, and love them for that.
You could do alot worse in a rifle, it was reliable as any of the Rugers I`ve owned.
I fantasized alot about throwing one in a factory canoe-paddle stock and seeing if that helped the balance issue.
All in all a real niche gun that`s not for everyone, handle one before you buy!

Mad dog these appear to be a match made in heaven for the terms you have listed for it's use. It should handle with anything in the field, and when you step into an open chopping, the .308 family of cartridges will be your friend ,even in 16"s of barrel!
Great choice, wish I had one. I believe I even offered an M100 carbine to a gent here on trade for one, but he wasn't into semi autos!

Bravo on your Timber gun choice.:agree:

I bought one in 243 for my wife from Frontier Firearms....its damn near the only rifle that will fit her and allow her to shoot without flinching etc. The short barrel has a bit of a jump but its hardly relevant.

Great rifle, very handy but it is a shorth range proposition ( under 250 metres ), you leave at least 150 fps on the table maybe more... The only test i made was with Superformance 165 gr SST, out of my Icon they run 2800 fps out of my compact they barely make it over 2600 fps, not really important under 250 metres but that 425 metres shot would be hasardous... Cheers. JP.

I put my 308 into a canoe paddle stock and it does help. The barrel looks even shorter with the full-size stock.:D

a friend brought one over and we drilled some big holes in the butt and then drilled some holes in the forend barrel channel and glued in some 44 cast bullets. Made a big difference in the handling.
