I hate Canadian gun laws!

Ccw

I agree with you Mr. T.G.'

There's a lot of evidence that CCW has had significant impact on violent crime in many states. It probably has the most dramatic results in cities or parts thereof that have become war zones.

If it were not for a "problem" at the border, I would be well on my way to a Texas CCW now. I'll try again next year.

My biggest problem is with the notion that if you can walk, talk or chew gun or anyone of the three, you can buy a gun. To me, the CCW courses are a joke in terms of safety training. If you can put three rounds on the paper at seven yards, you qualify. I've seen some really scary situations up front and ugly with people who didn't know how to load a magazine or how to operate the safety were given a handgun and a box of ammo to learn by doing in the stall next to me.

I want my CCW here particularly for when the reciprocity legislation passes if it does, so that I have a piece of US based firearm documentation in my pocket and so that I can be armed when I can't avoid dangerous situations and places.

I really don't have all that many answers but I sure don't want to see the situation at home mirror what I see and hear down here. There are extremes and exceptions everywhere but I just don't want to feel, think or act the way many Americans think they must.

You are privy to a situation that I know very little about. If CCW is to be tolerated in Canada I would hope to see adequate courses for those that want to carry. There is a certain responsibility that comes with CCW. While I do not believe that CCW is an entitlement, it must however be a tool that I can choose to help defend my family.

cybershooter and tiriaq,

I always enjoy reading your posts, they are more thoughtful and less "Boo hoo,it sucks to be us". Keep up the good work!

One very minor thing, though...
The only real advantage they have over us is no barrel limit or calibre prohibition.

.

No limit on the small end, but .50 cal max in the USA.
It seems that Big Is Scary in the USA, while Small Is Scary up here.
Some day I'm going to rebarrel a handgun to .52 or .54 cal, and create my own wildcat round.
I'm going to the round the .52 Yaconut, as in "Ya All Can't Own Nuthin' Up Thar."

Yes, I spent too much time daydreaming...

I'm sorry TG,

I wasn't suggesting that CCW was in the cards in Canada. The legislation I was referring to is US law that makes it mandatory for states to recognize the CCW permits of other states. Meaning that except for New Jersey, a CCW holder in any state would have CCW rights in the entire country. The law is yet to be passed through both legislative branches. I don't think we will ever see CCW in Canada but I for one would be happy with legal home defense or better still something similar to the "Castle Doctrine" in the US where your "home" is extended to your cottage. In some cases, your "castle" is extended to your boat or car here.

From my best information, I could have qualified for a Texas CCW by satisfying several requirements including an "Alien" number but that was refused by an ill informed US Customs agent. You must get that number or an immigration form when you enter the US. If I had been successful in getting the Texas CCW, that would have been honoured by many states even before the new legislation.

another Canadian plus or two

We can get delivery direct to our residents whereas our American friends have to go through an FFL and pay a fee.

We can order online, submit documentation by fax or similar and get the gun in the mail.

Our PAL is our background check. Most American's have to submit documentation when buying, wait for the background check (usually fast but not always) and in quite a few cases, wait a cooling off period before they can go pick up the gun.

In Detroit I could have shot a full-auto MP5 and another machine gun (forget what it was now), with my Ontario drivers licence. Loaded 33rds of 9mm into a mag at the range, man it was a treat. The range guys had open carry. Depends on the state, some are restrictive like NY, others are the wild west, like MI. There was an AK47 pistol (30rd capacity) that is considered a handgun, in their display case. There was some cool sh!t there.
