Will we ever see the 7.62x54r go mainstream for ammo?

I wonder if we will ever see the "BIG" ammo producers put out some 7.62x54r? I know Winchester re-boxes some S&B, but that is about it. What say ye?

I really don't see what you're getting at? PRVI and S&B are two of the finest ammunition makers on earth, and the price is half of the cheap US made ammo that seems to be exported in reduced amounts to Canada. Further to this , you have LVE from Russia and MFS from Hungary. On the surplus side, Russian and Czeck ammo is a reasonable price. Good quality hunting loads with usable brass are about a buck a round, and hunting loads with steel cases shoot well and are still cheaper than home rolled loads.

So... since Canada is unworthy of US produced ammo, the share of the market has been picked up by European producers. On the reloaders side of things, we have dies in X54r from all the die-makers, and we've had reloading data in our books for 40 years.

I'm not sure how much American made ammo you purchase, but the price has gone up and the quality has gone downhill. I throw new brass in the recycle pile, its not worthy of loading anymore. It doesn't bother me that the big US players aren't playing, they would just screw up the market anyway. Its a very positive change to have new eastern players in our ammunition market.

Unless you're new to this caliber, its been here all along and product selection has both increased and improved. Oh, and decent shooting rifles are a hundred bucks. I don't see that there is any problem at all. Take another look, its all good.

Well, I like to use 180gr hunting ammo in my Mosin. As of now, that is not available to me locally or on-line. If I could get some Winchester or S&B I would.

However, the point of my thread is that with a HUGE amount of Mosins coming on the market, maybe now we will see the larger ammo producers pick up the line.

Winchester and Remington BOTH produced 7.62 Russian (as they called it) and 8mm Lebel from the period of the Great War up until about the Korean War.

Both were discontinued for lack of sales, the Lebel about 1950 and the Nagant round shortly afterwards, if memory serves me.

Guess all those Westinghouse Moisin-Nagants and Remington Berthiers didn't have a heck of a lot of fans, even though US used a bunch of the MNs for training rifles and in combat in Siberia.

Odd rounds, sometimes a box, still turns up at gun shows, much more in the States than here. American ammunition was a very definite anomaly on the Canadian market until after 1968, which is when IVI de-listed almost ALL of Dominion's entire list (including .43 Mauser, for which I will NEVER forgive them) and then ruined the rest by poor quality control.

After that, it's a long road uphill again.

Maybe we can hope but, until then, it's Sellier & Bellot, Prvi Partizan or Norma Projektilfabrik if you want decent Boxer-primed stuff. Perhaps the Russians will wise up and change over to Boxer primers.

It must be your location, Dave. Just about every store here, other than Crappy Tire and Wally-mart sells S&B and PRVI. I haven't picked up any new stuff lately because I was buying it for brass. I have over a thousand cases for loading now.

Failing the supply of that, have you tried Westrifles LVE in 203gr SP? Its a good load for up to a couple hundred yards. The heavy bullet doesn't make any more of a mess than a bad shot from any other gun because its velocities are slower than magnum calibers. Non resusable cases works out to about 70 cents per shot including shipping to Alberta. it costs me that much to load them.

I have tried the MFS 203gr. I didn't like the trajectory. I can get lots of PRVI but it's only 150gr. I might try the LVE stuff.

Hi Dave
The last PRVI I found in 54r was from Ryan at SFRC. It was a bit pricey but it's boxer primed and very reloadable. The last 500 rounds I got were 182g and I've been getting excellent results with it in my 91/30's and carbines. I'm fireforming brass for each one. I'm actually due for another 500. I'll see if SFRC can get some more. unfortunately the LVE is brass washed or plated and Berdan primed.

That happened 100 years ago when Remington and Westinghouse dumped the Czars run of Mosins on the US market. Never going to happen again unless the PKM becomes popular for civis.

Mainstream, to me, means ammo is available at your local Canadian Tire or Walmart outlet.

Its because of companies like this monopolizing such a large share of the market, taking sales from the local shop. I support my local shop, and he brings in the products that I like, not just specialty items.

If we stopped supporting Crappy Tire and the likes, our local shops would have masses of inventory. When people correct the errors in their ways, complaints of above become unfounded.

Who needs the American brass when we have much better options? Lapua and PRVI are getting my money these days. Much better brass quality for the money and ammo too. Lots of top shooters are using Russian primers I hear.
The more I test Lapua bullets, the more I like them even better than Sierra. Bergers are too pricey. I like Hornady for good plinking ammo cause it's cheap, no other reason.
YMMV

Agreed but the ammo selection at a lot of these stores gets smaller every time they rework the sporting goods section.

And it seems that the price always goes up. I've bought most of my .303B from TSC and its been the best price in my area. Walmart and crappy are always at least $2 more.

I am not pleased with the remington ammo that I've bought. I bought some 6.5x55se and it was loaded way to hot for my liking; and out of 30 rounds of 30-06 that I've fired I've had 2 primer punctures.

Just today, I've fired my first box of prvi 7.62x54mmR from my new mosin and I was very impressed with it. I will definatly be buying more of that.

Now if only prvi would load the .303B FMJ with flat based ammo

121 years and its not going to get any more popular. This round begs to be reloaded, and many of us do.
