IPSC Production choices

I know you said you didn't like the Shadow, but have you tried one? If you haven't that could change your mind. If you have and didn't like it, well you may not be the first, but it's a very small club. I absolutely love my Shadow. Buying it was the best decision I made.

I haven't tried one yet. I may see if TSE has one to try when I head in next few days, but tough call, I bleed Sig blue - haha.

We'll see.... I don't have to spend the money now on a gun I own already :D

Ok, I'll start with my P229 - at the LEAST I will get much better at shooting it & then see where my interests go.

Anyone able to point me towards Belt / holster / mag carriers (and what other things I may need?), Glasses & hearing protection are covered, I have a Blackhawk Level 2 CQC Duty Serpa Holster currently (should work for IPSC start). And I've been looking for websites with Competitive Pistol training exercises too, so far all I have been doing is the 'white wall trigger pull' drill to try to get less barrel movement on trigger squeeze.

** and I should probably get gear that will double for IDPA as well !

Comp-Tac

Wilderness Original Instructor Belt (Scroll to the bottom of the page)

Your Serpa will probably work, for now, for IPSC. If you are going to buy a new holster, consider both Comp-Tac <http://www.comp-tac.com/index.php> and Raven <http://www.ravenconcealment.com/>.

For playing the games forget the Serpa holster. I know you already have it but you will find it to be slower than the following holsters and wedgy prone under the thrill of competition. You don't need the double/triple retention for starters. Get a Blade Tech or Com Tac holster, they aren't expensive, along with the Wilderness belt and you will be good to go for both sports. Stick with proven designs if you can.

Take Care

ps If you got the Wilderness Belt route get the polymer buckle. You will find you wear the belt a lot and if ever you are travelling be air you won't have to remove the damn thing every time you go through airport security....don't ask

IPSC no longer has a production division.

It's simply shadow division now.

I agree, if you aren't shooting a shadow or a clone of it, you are doing it wrong :)

But if you are in it for a lot of fun then by all means shoot the 229, you already have the gun, just get a bladetech holster for it and rock on.

If you like, we can hook up at TSE for some range time. I can bring a few of what I use including a shadow for you to try out.

I shoot mostly standard, but for fun I like to occasionally dabble in the shaduction division, and I have a TACOPS 226 with the 20 round mags (capped at 10 of course). I really like the gun and it shoots very well - the only drawback for me is the very heavy double action first shot. I'm sure that the issue is just practice for me as my standard gun's trigger pull is about 1.8 lbs while the 226's is about 10 lbs, so I just need to shoot it a lot more to get used to it.

Out of the box you have a very functional gun with a nice magwell and fibre optic front sight. I would definitely recommend the 20 round mags as standard 10 rounders can be difficult to seat because of the magwell, and from Questar it came with 4 of them (I bought 2 more just because I like to have 6 mags in case of malfunctions/brain farts).

I can't speak to the H&K as I've never handled one, but the TACOPS certainly has a lot of potential - I even won one stage at last years Summer Slam event with it (as to the rest of the stages, refer to my previous comments about brain farts and more practice with DA shots).

Is it as "tweakable" as a Shadow, no. Is it fun to shoot, yes. And personally I like the decocker function for a lower risk setup of your DA shot (having met a couple of people who've DQ'd dropping the hammer by mistake).

What ever you choose, as many have already stated the key is to have fun and get out to shoot!

Lol!! THe OP might want to know this as well...

You want to know what all the hype about the Shadow is all about?

Let me tell you this... I do not compete in IPSC at the moment but...

Pretty much all the people I get to know at clubs where I shoot that owns a Shadows and compete in IPSC ( production obviously )will eventually tell or told me that they did a "special trigger job" on it, changed some parts and springs and how easy it is to do with CZ pistols.

How is that bunch of cheating wankers! :D

It is legal to play around with triggers, sears, springs etc in production? I have no clue since I always used a stock gun for Production as I was told to use only a stock gun with a trigger over 5lbs in DA. But I know this for a fact. CZ guys like to change/swap/ upgrade their pistols. Hehe...

you may change any part out that is made by the manufacturer of that gun. CZ realized this and therefore there are very few parts that can't be changed out to suite your needs. And yes changing out the mainspring takes about 5 minutes and makes a HUGE difference in the DA pull.

+2 on my point. How clever for other brand users. I see IPSC like the F-1 car racing sometimes... Everybody is looking for the best car out there. Never mind the pilot.

I am a stock car fan no doubts.

Therein lies the cause of a current lack of a diversity of guns in PD. And that diversity used to be the hallmark of PD in the early days; pity that it's no longer the case. :(

It has a lot to do with gun design, CZs have replaceable BOTH - front and rear sights, and sights are allowed been replaced for ages now. Most internal and external parts like slide stop, hammer, disconnector, trigger etc are interchangeable due to design. Springs were made available in different power due to same length and diameter springs used in 9mm, .40 and .45 guns.

Same goes with 1911s - many makes and models use parts that either fit or can be fitted with little work.

With their light triggers and hefty weight which makes the gun recoil only slightly more than a .22, it is almost like shooting a standard gun in production so I don't blame everyone else for switching. Kudos to CZ for capitalizing as well.

I plan on dominating the IPSC circuit this season with my polymer pistol by the way LOL :D.
