Electropencilled number on M14 bolt ?

I managed to get hold of a mixed bag of M14 parts. Which is either incredible foresight or pathetic, depending on your perspective, as I don't own an M305 yet....

Op rod is TRW marked, I assume gas plug and piston are GI but unmarked so I am not sure (they will not fit an M305 based on what I have read here, correct?). Spring looks GI.

Bolt is SA and has a number electropencilled on the top. I know this is not a GI trait, but has anyone seen that before ? There were some Israeli rifles/parts in Canada at one time, is this one ? Or is it just Bubba ?

Any info appreciated.

I think that's the number of confirmed kills the gun got in Nam, let's see, yours says 6823 so it must have been mounted on a chopper.

The EP number on the bolt is pretty common to Israeli import M14 stuff. Totally normal. I've also seen it on some Marine Corps-issued rifles, but no idea why it was there.

Maybe Different will chime in with better info.

Nice snag on those parts. They are worth as much as a new M305 just by themselves!

The gas plug will work on a GI or American aftermarket gas cylinder. The GI piston will work in a Chinese cylinder if it's in spec, but with those parts, I'd look for a GI cylinder (or copy thereof) as it's a nice upgrade.

Cool ! That kinda makes sense because I bought the parts off of these guys in the parking lot at Walmart.

Yup, you have some Isreali USGI parts on hand and I kinda like that electropencil effect because that proves it's a remnant of the good old days when we bought Isreali M14 rifles for $ 400 back in the mid-80's and I was getting schooled on how to build and tweak these babies.

Not sure who the distributor was, but we bought them from Guns R' Us when they were located (Ontario Sporting Supplies, Frank Jr. and Frank Sr) on Hwy 7. I cannot forget to mention Alan Lever and Milarm... They sold them like mad also! Good times. There, that's all the history I know...

Israel surplussed a bunch of M14's i nthe 1980's and most of them ended up in Canada, presumably because it was difficult to re-import them to the US. Back i nthe day, many of us shot service rifle with accurized Israeli M14's before two things happened:

1) The AR15 became more readily avaialble and the C7 was adopted by the CF and proved itself to be better suited to accurate match shooting.

2) The M14 was ruled a converted automatic by the federal government and became much more difficult to posess and transport.

Since that time, MANY israeli guns have been destroyed and their parts kits transplanted onto Chinese receivers, or used to "upgrade" later production M1A's to mostly USGI parts (i.e. the way they should be sold).

My current M305 is a 2005 Norinco receiver with a match barrel, but all the other parts are from an Israeli HRA M14 I used to own
