Well as far as I know you have to get them custom built off an existing gun, i.e. Glock, M&P, Xdm.

Well i guess you would have to be a fan of polymer pistols to start with, which i'm not. I guess if you could get a really well done one it could be a good gun, in the end it all comes down to the person shooting it.

Im pretty sure I'm gonna build my xdm into a open 9x40 with a trijicon rmr slide ride red dot.

Polymer frame open gun???

Unless you want something that will use an existing polymer frame - or - you just want something to play around with but will never shoot as well as an SV/STI open gun go ahead.

I think the results will be dissappointing if you want it to be competitive.

If you want a smaller grip 9mm open then have a look at CZ open guns.

40 S&W cases are not really strong enough to withold the amount of gas that you would need to make a 40 work a comp effectively.

Agian if you just want to use a red dot sight bcause your eyes are bad then an open gun in any type of frame would be OK, if not really competative.

if i go slide mount it will be a fast fire, or that cmore one that isnt the sts... see them in the states but not here for some reason. but im prob going to work on a way to frame mount it

lots of Open glocks around in USPSA, like IPSIK said they don't compare to an SV or STI. Still fun to shoot, Dan Burwell (burwellguns.com) would be a good person to contact about "race'n-up" an M&P. Tell him Big Awsome sent you, won't get you anything but it will give him a few laughs.

If it works for you, why not?

Just keep in mind that you'd have to make the gun work for the far higher pressures that open major requires.
