Proof that Leupold makes Redfied scopes

So my new Leupold scope arrives today. A shiny(matte) new VX-II 1-4x20. After a quick external once over, I have a peek through the glass and immediately notice that the reticle is not right. I quickly check the box and confirm that it is supposed to be a Duplex reticle but that's not what I have. I head online and do a search for Leupold reticles using Google images. Nothing looks the same as what I have. Next I go to Leupolds main site and double check that the only reticle available for the VX-II 1-4x20 is indeed the Standard Duplex. Hmmm.The plot thickens. Finally, after another half hour of digging through Leupolds site, I give up and give Leupold USA a call. After verifying my serial number with the tech and lots of over the phone head scratching, I'm put on hold while he goes to talk with one of their engineers. Ten minutes later he returns. It turns out, I have a Redfield Accu-Range reticle installed where there obviously shouldn't be one. Looks like somebody grabbed the wrong part the day they were putting mine together. So now I'm the owner of a Leupold/Redfield hybrid love child and my options are to return it for a new one. Send it in to the Korth Group and have the reticle replaced or keep it and enjoy the uniqueness of said hybrid. I have sent an email to Korth to get some more info on the reticles usefulness with a 4x scope.
 
As good as the accu-range reticle is I can't see much use of it on a 1-4 power scope as it's meant to shoot out to 600m. If I were in your shoes, I'd be torn on what to do as I do really like that reticle.

I am. Waiting to hear from Korth but am leaning towards keeping it as is. Always nice to have a one of a kind.(maybe,depending on how bad of a day that worker had :))
 
If it's for a 223 rifle keep it as I love this reticale.
;)
But on a side note when I stated this a few months ago everyone said that they were made in China.
I guess not eh?

Haven't decided which rifle to put it on yet. Couldn't pass up the sale price at WSS. Might swap it with my Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44 on my Can
Am shorty.

According to the tech I spoke to they are made on the same factory floor. He was the one who commented that "this proves that Redfields are built in the same place as Leupold"
 
If it were mine, and for a short range rifle, I'd send it to korth and have them put in a #4 reticle.
 
Get documentation from the plant and keep it NIB or LNIB so you can sell it 20 years later as a rare and collectible part of Leupold history. ;)
 
Spoke with Korth today. It seems I have poked the hornets nest as far as Leupold USA is concerned. Their scrambling to find out how many more of these "custom" units may be out there. I think somebody is going to have their but chewed out.
That being said, I had a positive discussion with what appears to be the head and only technician working there. We discussed the realities of trying to use the accu-range reticle in this 4 power scope and both agreed that it wasn't going to be an ideal setup. I asked if it was possible to add the CDS custom turrets onto it and was told no problem. I think this is the way I am going to go. Now I just have to decide what reticle would work best for me. Seems like I have lots of choices. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm going to be mounting this on either my shorty M-14 or Ruger compact 308. For what its worth,Tony at Korth, suggested the Leupold dot reticle.
 
You have obviously contacted Tony Gauthier who posts here on this sight. He is an excellent resource and knows more about the technical side of Leupold or optics in general than anyone I know. We are lucky to have him and Korth Group supporting the Leupold line in Canada. Phil.

I couldn't agree more. He was very knowledgable and even though he was obviously very busy, he took the time to explain the various options to me and answer all of my questions. A real pleasure to deal with.
 
Only Leupold could get away with totally botching the construction stage of a product and get credit for it. Any other manufacturer would have taken a beating from the masses.
Is it because Leopold makes a superior product? If you think so, you may want to re-read the first post in this thread.

Happy it all worked out in the end! I would keep the hybrid for the novelty aspect, provided the reticle suited my needs.

It happens with every manufacture that we deal with including heavy hitters like Zeiss. All manufactures can make mistakes (hopefully not to many or frequently), it's what they do to solve the problem that counts in my world. Most companies will eventually solve a problem but it is how long it will take that becomes the issue. Phil.
