ACR 10.5" Barrel cut (Down from a 16.5" Barrel)

Hey everyone. I am a newbie in barrel cutting but I would very much like to modify my ACR 16.5" barrel into a 10.5" barrel.

Now I know there theres a couple areas I'll have to research before starting the work. This includes:

- Legal Overal Length of the rifle (I have a folding Stock)
- Gas port sizes (currently a mid-length gas system)
- Relocation of the piston assembly to the rear
- Cutting the piston rod if the assembly is being pushed backwards.

Just wanted to know if this is do-able, or is there any gunsmith out there in Canada has done this before.

If you are a gunsmith that had experience in doing this, I would gladly like to discuss with you, or even have you do the smithing for me.

If you cut the OEM 16.5" barrel down you will create a prohibited device.

If you want a 10.5" ACR barrel, you'll have to buy a new-made one.
 
I always thought it is only prohibited if you cut a Non-restricted barrel down to Restricted length? But legal if you cut a Restricted barrel further down, within Restricted lengths?

I really wonder when the Bushmaster Rep will start supplying 10.5" Barrels to Canada
 
You'll have to buy a newly manufactured barrel at the length you want, you can't take a hacksaw to any Restricted firearms barrels. Sorry.
 
You might want to research our gun laws first...

Just ask a gunsmith to convert an AR barrel but you'll need the original ACR barrel for parts (extension, locking ring, gas block, and piston assembly).

It would look pretty cool with a shorty but I prefer the longer route.
 
Anyone have datas on the gas port sizes of a 10.5 inch barrel?

I heard you will need to cuz the original 16.5" piston rod too... seems like a big project even for gunsmiths.

Any input? :)

Not anymore, supposedly you used to be able to, but now you cannot cut ANYTHING under 18" (yes 18, and you can make it restricted for a semi-auto, but obviously pointless) unless it's being newly made from a barrel blank.
 
If I decide to go for the 12.5", what steps do I have to take to modify the AR barrel into accepting those gas systems on an ACR?

Would I have to resize the gas port for reliable cycling?
Would I have to have a gunsmith to drill out portions on the AR barrel for the roll pins(2) on the gas block?

I suspect this may be a very expensive modification!

Couldn't tell you. I just know that it's been done, and 12.5" was the minimum length to avoid screwing with the gas system.

Would there be anyway for us in Canada to buy those ACR 10.5 inch barrels straight from bushmaster? Anyone looking to import these barrels(Gas system included) to Canada? I'm sure there would be a huge market for these items.

Can't export barrels less then 16.5 out of the us.
Which is why people like myself ,nea,atrs and dlask make our ar15 barrels here.
These so called factory short ar15 you see in canada for sale at some dealers are being imported as pistols. Then sold as rifles. When bafta and HS works this out there is going to be some unhappy canadians. One small canadian company is already under investgation.

So in short don't cut your bbl. Have one made.
For a one off with a good bbl blank you looking at 500- 800$
