I was looking at a Ruger SR9. I was wondering if anyone has one and if
it is a good starter gun. Only guns i have shot are a ruger .22 of somesort and my friends magnum reserch 9MM. The reason i'm looking at the ruger is that price will be a issue at this time.

Love mine. It was my first handgun and it's a great value for the price you pay. Although I do wish I saved up a bit more and got a Sig P226... but hey... then I'll have the SR9 for friends to shoot after I save up some more for the Sig.

Was in the exact same boat you are in. Couldnt decide between a
GP100, a CZ 75 / 85; never even thought about a Ruger SR9, until I did some research. Hit up Youtube, some very good reviews of the SR9.
For me, paying $549 for a SR9 was a better investment then spending $800 on a CZ75 or $620 on a GP100 6" stainless (which I am still pondering). Ordered my SR9 yesterday from Prairie Gun Traders, just finished ATT stuff this afternoon.
Another reason I went with the SR9 is to kinda prove a point to the local dealer (s), trying to get $769 out of this same gun (SR9, which are backordered). Saving $200 on this made the GP100 $200 cheaper in my mind....;)

It IS a great starter gun. (relatively) Cheap ammo, incredibly reliable, ridiculously easy to fieldstrip, adjustable sights. What's not to like??

Some folks have had an issue with the trigger, but it smooths out and lightens up with use.

SR-9 is not just a starter gun, it is a very good gun. Shop around and some place sell under five hundred when on sale. If you buy used, make sure buy the lastest verson which has a D shape mag release. details can visit Ruger forum.

I bought one for my son as a starter gun, great pistol and hardly a starter gun. It feeds reliably shoots accurately is very easy to strip for cleaning and fits a lot of smaller hands well. Very nice gun. And very good gun for the money.

I ordered from wholesale sports and waited almost 2 weeks for them to tell me it was backordered... I did some research and found "Gobles" a small independant shop in Ontario that has the SR9 on sale, tomorrow is literally the last day... $475 right now, $545ish after tomorrow.. I shot the SR9C down in the states and it sold me the triggers are golden after you break them in.. Can't wait for mine!

thinking of my first handgun

Well my first handgun was a Smith&Wesson 586 which I sold and I wish I never did. If I were you I would look for a deal on a nice 357 Magnum. say a GP100 or if you have big hands a used Smith model 28.

you can find both within the price range you stated if you bide your time and watch what comes up for sale. I hate chaseing brass around the range floor and the 357 is much easier to reload for . and you can shoot 38 special out of them also.

plus if you take the wife or girlfriend to the range I have always found people who are new to shooting seem to be more at ease shooting a revolver than a semiauto. with the semi too many things seem to be happening at once for them . your choice. happy shooting.:D

I've only handled a SR9.
However, I've learned that basing a purchase on price will cost you more down the road when you need to sell it to get what you really wanted.
Save up your $$ for the "one" that calls to you.

IMO...chk the EE for a used G17. Easy to work on and lots of goodies for it(if that floats your boat)

You may also want to consider a Glock. I don't know what you do for a living, but research the Glock Individual Officer program, they sell their guns to almost any professional at very low prices. Last I checked, it was $505 CDN for a 9mm Glock 17 with three mags included. That is brand new in the box. You can't find anything much cheaper.

Police Ordnance is the Canadian Dealer for Glock.
