Hi guys, like the title says, I'm looking for a budget rifle, new or used for deer and coyote hunting.I want it to be very accurate for long shot varmint hunting.( read tack driver :D )

When I want to buy something, I'm always reading the most I can on that product. Id like to have your opinion...

Fisrt thing to consider is the caliber...
I thought maybe .243, 25-06, .223 ???

Second thing is the rifle itself, lets say I have a 400-600 bucks budget...
I thought :

-Zastava .243 built around K98 mauser action, about 400$ new but may be hard to find parts...???

-*Old* tikka M595 in .243 (pretty rare)... 400-600$ ??? and + $ ??? :(

-Used rem 700 in .243... 400-600$

-Any more recommendations ???

Dont know about the Axis, but packages typically have crappy scopes. If you want to shoot long distance, particularly in the wintertime, you'd better invest in a half decent scope - ie Bushnell 3200 or similar.

.243 sounds like the perfect caliber. I'd buy any of the rifles you listed over an axis, but thats me. If I was going to buy a cheap new rifle I'd look at the Marlin XS7 in .243.

As far as scopes, LeBarons has some pretty good deals on Leopold VX-Is and VX-IIs. Or look at Burris, Redfield, Bushnell Elite, Nikon.

Excellent suggestion:)

i think bushnell fits in that catagory.

I'd try to find a 25-06. A stevens 200, Savage Axis, or Marlin should all be plenty accurate, and I've heard good things about the Weaterby Vangaurd 2 (although I was less than impressed with the original Vangaurd).

I'm curious about the new Ruger American, but it'll be quite a while before we get them here, I think.

The H&R Handi is also an option - they're reliable and generally acceptably accurate, though my preference would be towards a bolt gun for this purpose.

I would avoid the Mossberg ATR, and the Remington 770.

I'd go stevens 200 before Axis or at least save a couple more bucks for a Savage 11 package. I'd look at 22-250, 243, 308 or 7mm_08 calibre wise

I wouldn't shoot a deer with a 22-250..... others are fine.... stevens is made by savage so not sure what the difference would be.... have never taken a close look at the two stripped....

Why not get a weatherby vanguard or a rem 700 sps?....
