First 22lr?

Okay, So iv been drooling over a new 12 gauge shot gun for the past couple months. A Benelli Supernove Tac :xes . unfortunately i think i may have to postpone this purchase as the Girl friend would like something more "useful". We will be living on a farm and will need a gopher killer, Plus a gun she's not afraid to handle so im looking into a 22lr. I would like a Semi Auto, Wood, Not a fan of the plastic tac look. Budgets in the 500$ mark. So far I kind of have it narrowed down to the CZ 512 and the Ruger 10/22 target. What ells would you guys suggest? I'm still crying over the idea of Postponing the Supernova :ang .
 
If you don't mind a 14 shot tube mag. vs. a removable box mag. then as was mentioned you may want to consider a Marlin 60. I just picked up this 60SS and right out of the box it's reliable and very good even with the iron sites.

Add some good optics and you can have a nice accurate shooter under $400.

Just Browsing the Marlin website I noticed they had a new model in 2011 the XT-22. Anyone have any experience with this model?
 
My go to 22 is my model 60. Same as target has. Accurate right out of the box and feels solid and fits well. And no sore fingers from the mag either!
 
I like the look of the 60 about 100x more than the box-mag-fed 795, but have hated tube mags ever since my Winchester 9422 days. Felt like I was disassembling the gun every time I had to reload. As a hunting gun, I'd pick a 60 unless it was high-volume gopher work. For plinking/target (and hunting) I think the box mags rule the day for me.
 
Have you thought of the Ruger 10 22? I love the Marlins but its amazing what you can do with a Ruger 10 22. I sold mine recently and missed it so much I purchased the same one. For about $280 - $300 you can get a very nice semi automatic witha wood stock, stainless satin finish, 10 round mag (many 25 round mags available by buttler creek).

The following is large and if you ever want to modify you can find anything you can almost dream of for it.

I believe the Marlin 60 passed the 11 million unit milestone couple years ago, and apparently they can't keep up with production....sometimes still hard to find in this country that I had to buy two previously loved 60s.

A buddy even traded his 60 for a SR9, would you believe? The SR9 owner was so impressed by the 60's accuracy that he traded a $450 gun for a $220 one. Well maybe that 60 was a prime example as it shot dime-sized groups at 50 meters with Dynapoints:eek::D, scoped of course.

Don't know how many 10/22s have been manufactured.

Just going to through this out there.... The Rem 597 has some pretty good reviews. Mines only got 100 rounds through it but it functioned perfectly. Semi auto.

Packages available for $200 with a scope.
 
Marlin 60 and Ruger 10/22 owners represent opposing views on .22LR rifles.

Both types are enjoying the sport, BTW. You just have to determine which type of owner you are.

Marlin 60 owner: likes Marlins, happy with box stock rifle, likes tube magazines (model 795 for 10 rd-box magazine), not interested in tweaking or putting more money into the gun, doesn't care if he is un-cool, prefers box-stock reliability, durability and accuracy above all qualities, maybe has less disposable income than 10/22 owner.

Ruger 10/22 owner: likes Rugers, likes box mags up to 25+ rds, likes to tweak - translation...spend money on improving his rifle, likes to have the coolest looking 22 rifle, probably has more disposable income than the Marlin 60 owner.

I just can't see buying a Ruger, then buying a new barrel, trigger, stock, receiver, etc...
That CZ is really nice.

Well the picture of the marlin that Target posted is pretty darn ###y, I don't think I would want to mod it and i do like reliable accurate and durable all in one package. On the other hand i do like the mods I'v seen done with the 10/22 and i love the detachable box mags... Jesus this was supposed to make the choice easier! :HR: I think marlin as the price is right, may have to pick up a 10/22 later down the road.

I like the cz as well but i just haven't heard much about that particular model, cz from what i hear make really good gunz. I think my first pick is the marlin, the price is right... if that's not available then it will come down to what my local shop has available.

Just to let you know that while I love my Marlin 60SS for it's capabilities I also have a low cost toy to play with that will still get some mods. It's a Mossy tactical w/ both 10 shot mags and 25 shot mags.

So you will eventually want a few rimfires for sure.

And since you were interested in shotguns, I just picked up this nice NEF combo from a fantastic fellow gunnutz for my 11 year old and he's pretty excited.
Here's a poor photo of it. It's a SS, Ducks Unlimited 20 ga. and 30-30 combo. The 20 ga. is perfect so he doesn't have to be punished with my 12 ga's and the 30-30 will allow him to try for a deer.

BTW IIRC the Marlin 60SS was $237 and the Scope was $50 both brand new from Wholesale.
