My understanding of the stats re law enforcement is that most forces have converted or are converting to .40 cal from 9mm... Don't have a source, just from stuff I've been reading...
In Canada and the US maybe, but not in the rest of the world.

What do you think? Will 9mm stay the most common choice until the end of cartridge ammunition? Or will something replace it as number one?
Lots of cartridges (e.g. .303British, .30-30) are still around a long time after they became obsolete. The 9mm isn't obsolete yet.
.40 is a N. American thing - everywhere else it's 9x19 all the way (well, mostly anyway). It's the universal service pistol cartridge...
Dr Jim, perhaps in the hands of the enthusiasts and the 1911 faithful. But even down there sales of 9mm semis and ammo is far more common than the more expensive .45acp stuff. Remember that they have a huge mainstream gun owning population that bought them as a defensive tool and once they have one don't give the gun or the gun enthusiast lifestyle another thought.
Conceivably but not for a LONG time...it is in such heavy use that there has been extensive load development over the last 10 years or so, so it has really gotten to be as effective as larger calibers.
All handgun calibers have limited terminal effect so I don't expect to see nearly as much change there as in rifles.
Even in North America, I believe that 9mm represents approximately 60% of LE issue guns, and all the other remaining calibers split the other 40%.

Judging by the amount of fired brass on the range floor, I'd say 9mm ammo consumption by POCO club members, outpaces all other pistol calibers by at least 5 to 1.
I don't know about other ranges around BC and Canada.
I believe cost is the biggest influence in the niners popularity (centerfire). Seems there's even more 9mm brass than .22LRs at the POCO range.![]()
And NYPD is on the 35 to 40,000 range.
