I posted this in rimfire but thought id post it here to and see what you guys think. Should i trade my Savage 93R17 FV (totally decked out) for a ruger sr-22? I will get to keep scope and bipod. I love the 17 to death but just cant afford to shoot it at 15 bucks for 50 shots. The gun is awesome, i just cant afford to shoot it. Do you think i should trade it??

it is hard descion because it was my 1st gun i have ever owned and there is a slight emotional tie, but parents say i have to have one or the other, not both :(

22's cheap to shoot, but look at it this way: If you sold the .17, would you lay in bed at night and wish you didn't do it? If so, tough it out for awhile and you'll pick up a .22 one day. Half the fun of buying new rifles is the anticipation and research...

Your right, but at the same time, i think what gets me, is i want it to go to a good home. That gun is very good gun, but just cant afford to shoot it.

How old are you? I'll tell you why I ask: When you're 15-17 or so you think in terms that things don't change very quickly, but your life will be changing faster than you think. Once you graduate you'll be doing your own thing and might miss the little .17...
On the other hand, at that point you can always but another one - maybe even buy one a grade or two up!

take the old man uptown and buy him an ice cream treat, tell him how you feel about wanting to keep your first rifle and what that means to a deep souled gun guy and you would simply like to add a .22 to your collection. I'm pretty sure he'll come around and say: it's your collection, so it's your call, son! :)
Worth a try! If the result is not positive, go to post #13! ;)

I personally would only sell a Gun if

A) I was very displeased with it
B) An offer I couldn't refuse
C) Cops decided it was a prohibited weapon and I was forced to get ride of it.

What C-FBMI Said, what your folks don't know wont hurt you. In other words, see if you have a buddy who can hold on to it for you if you absolutely need this new rifle. By the sounds of it, I honestly think you will regret selling your savage, you sound attached to it.

Its only a rifle, and they make savages everyday. I'd rather have one I can enjoy shooting, instead of one that will sit in the safe.

Leave yopur emotion at the door. A guns a gun. If this guns not doing it for you, or you cant afford to shoot it, then send it down the road in favour of one you'll get to use more. :) I just parted with a gun I had for years because I couldn't justify feeding it and other things, and I bought a .223, much better for me and what my needs are right now.

If I were you though I try and trade it for a simlar .22LR, just because I dont like semi's but whatever floats your boat.

May I suggest that what the parents don't know won't hurt them, do you have a good buddy you trust (like a hunting buddy)? Get him to hold the .17 for a couple years, buy a .22 and have the best of all worlds, the parents will get over it, if they ever find out, in the future;)

Trust your parents they usualy know what's best for you.
