.257 weatherby mag is it worth it?

Nothing Shoots Flatter, Hits Harder or is More Accurate than a ...
Ok,ok, I know it is all relavent to the game your hunting and where you hunt and some marketing genius too, but they sure are fun to shoot and they sound cool when you touch one off .
I started with a Vangaurd when they where about $399.00 and have since moved up to a Accumark in .257 Wby.(1700.00) recently.
The Vangaurd had a tight factory shot target and that added some confidence.
In fact I was able to replicate the factory shot one and maybe a little better. But, i digress. Either the gun fits you and is comfortable to carry or it isnt or you put up with those short comings, not to mention pricey ammo for the premium bullets, upwards of $75.00 for the accubonds/barnes, etc...
This is a fun cartridge for some long range shooting and when the bullet connects with your game of choice it aint going very far.
Then again the 30-30 is a fun gun to hunt with and also will kill the game animal of choice when you do your part to get close enough.
Did I mention I like mine??
Tight Groups,
Rob

260 bullets wont bounce off a deer, and both cartridges drop past 300 yards enough that if you just aim at hair, you'll miss or break off front legs

a shooter with a laser RF, lots of practice ammo and a milder cartridge will be more deadly at long range than the classic Wby owner, a 300 lb yankee with a belt buckle the size of a dinner plate that is engraved with "Hydrostatic shock 1.5moa cowboy"

Can you pm me the details of where I could purchase such a thing?

It has to be at least this size:

Here was my 257 Weatherby. A 28 inch Gallard barrel on a Remington 700 Action. Tack driver........always under 1/2 inch and 100 grain ballistic tips travelling at over 3,700 fps. Sold it to my friend and now he's happy.:DIf I had the money I would purchase a Lazerroni Scramjet.

So the 260 is the new quintessentially modest, peace loving Canadian caliber then? The 303 has been dethroned..................

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you haven't shot a .257 Weatherby at 400 yards.

Ummm...no it doesn't. My 257 Wby (85 grainers) is sighted in at "0" at 300 yards. The ballistics are equivalent (trajectory) to my 243 with 70 gr bullets sighted in at 100 yards.

At 500 yds, the WBY drops like my 243 at 300 yds.

at 100 yds, the Wby as about 2" high. So no, it is a damn straight shooter! :D

Not sure what you're saying, but my .257 (100 grain Ballistic tips) is about 3 inches give or take low at 400 when sighted a bit less than 3 inches high at 100. A highish center hold on deer sized animal takes care of things to a quarter mile.

In any event, I'm not overly concerned with shooting legs off "over 300 yards"

Edit to add;

I much prefer targets to programs, but plug 3600 fps and .4 BC into this.

I was a bit tired when I wrote it. Essentially, we are saying the same thing.

The trajectories of my 257 Wby at 300 yards to 600 yards is nearly identical to my 243 at 100 yards to 400 yards. The 257 is an impressive performer.

how is it that the 257 is so great while guys say the 264 win mag is no better than the 6.5-06 or 270 win, and the 7mm RM is no better than the 30-06?

oh yeah, just a little off topic, but how come my reloading book says that the 7mm weatherby can take 10 grains more powder than the 7mm rem mag?
