Good budget rifle for deer and coyote hunting...

I wouldn't shoot a deer with a 22-250..... others are fine.... stevens is made by savage so not sure what the difference would be.... have never taken a close look at the two stripped....

Why not get a weatherby vanguard or a rem 700 sps?....

Weatherby seem to be a gr8 rifle but its 600+tax..
I can have a used tikka for that price...

SPS with bull barrel... I want it lightwieght !!!

I see the .243 is the way to go...

Ok the 400-600 budget is for the rifle only...
The less I pay for the rifle the more I can spend on a scope.
I know long shots need a decent scope but I don't want to buy another Nightforce !!!
Id like to have one with target turrets.

As much as I love my Savage 10 fcpk and I loved my Mk2 TR 22lr I can't say the Axis is attracting me.

The Marlin seem to have gr8 features for the price.

For the scope I did not decided the budget yet.

Weatherby vanguard is well in your price level at wholesale sports.... I'd check again.... you want light weight then sadly yes, the rems are not for you.....

I am no savage fan but the 111 is way better than the axxis in your price range.... barring that, find a used one... I missed out on a rem700 stainless in a grey boyd's laminate stock for 550 because I hemmed and hawed... they are out there....

weatherby vs marlin :D

Weatherby... they say , 1.5inch 3-shot group @ 100 yards
500y = 7.5 inch :(

I saw used Tikka T3 for about 600$...
I'm sure you can do better than 1.5inch @ 100y with a Tikka.

The Weatherby (made by Howa), or the XS7, or (shudder) savage should all do better than 1.5"@ 100 with a good load.

Dude, try the search function or just read down a few topics down in this forum. Lord knows we don't need another Savage/Stevens thread.

I'm gonna start a bear defence thread to mix things up a bit, been a while....... :D

can you make it a 4 legged cougar defense thread instead, I need some pointers and I've seen the 2 legged thread, already.

While the Marlin XS7 is an excellent choice, and the one I would absolutely recommend as a previous owner (yes, wish I had kept it), the Bushnell 3200 line of scopes I have not found to be very good. Bushnells don't start to become a good scope until you enter the realm of the 4200 models. Whatever you do, do not buy an Axis/Edge under any circumstances, unless you need a spare tomato stake for the garden. Yes, I owned one...for a brief period of time. JMO.

The vangaurds come with a sub-7.5" 500 yard group gaurantee now?!?!

Man I gotta sign me up for one of thems!

I have never seen as many good deals as there are out there right now. Stevens 200s for under $300; Marlin XS7 for just over $300; Vanguards for ~$450 (even with wood stocks); Ruger #1s for under $800; Zastava M98s for $399; Tikka T3 SS for $649; SS Savages for under $600...and the list goes on.

There have also been lots of good deals on used stuff in the EE: the other day a Model 700 Mountain Rifle in .280 went for $500. Not to mention the dozens of Husqvarna 1600s for sale at Trade-ex.

There are lots and lots of great choices out there!

Where are the Stevens on sale?

I use a Stevens 200 in .243, 2.5 Tasco Mildot over Millet rings for deer, yotes, and open field Jackrabbit shooting. I reload for each app. Love this combo.

There were a few places - I can't remember off the top of my head. IIRC some had them for $299, and even as low as $269. Just not was I was looking for so I didn't bother making a note of where. Found a new T3 SS for $669 and the search ended right there!

Hmm  Euh :D

I've decided is to go with a .243... :yingyang:

But for the rifle... wise choice seem to be the Weatherby Vanguard S2, Marlin XS7 or save few more bucks and buy a Tikka...
I'm sure the Zastava is a good rifle but the parts may be hard to find in Canada...???

For the scope, I tried a Millett scope last week and I liked it...
Target turrets, nice reticle, side focus, good glasses...
Is that a good scope for outdoor / winter use ???

I wouldn't worry too much about parts for the Zastava. It is an M98 mauser, built on FN's tooling iirc. It is the same as Witworth and Interarms Mk.X.

Why not a sporterized M96 6.5x55SE from TradeEx? You can get a great one for about $300...Food for thought.

Tim

Finally, I went this way... Swedish 6.5 X 55
Its a 1906 Carl Gustav m96 sporter.
I'm really happy with the rifle.
Hope you enjoy and thx 4 all !!!
