Refinishing SKS Arctic Birch stock

Hi,

I just purchased an SKS and although the rifle in general is in excellent condition, the stock has some scratches and has initials written on it that I would like to take off. Has anyone tried to refinish an SKS stock? Any tips before I give it a try? I love the gun and wouldn't want to screw this up.

I refinished my Chinese SKS...It had a few minor gouges, scratches and an area that looked like it had woodfiller in it.....Anyway I got some furniture stripper, took the rifle apart and got going with the chem stripper...After the finish was off I washed it all down with warm water and let it dry...Used a hair blower to help dry it out and take out any oils or other contaminants...Then I sanded the stock to the feel of a baby's bottom without taking out the original numbers or markings...I then applied a gunstock stain...Then eight coats of Tru Oil....Turned out beautiful...The reason that I took it apart originally was because I did the Tapco mod thing on it...It is a gorgeous rifle like that however I keep getting this hankering to put it back the way it was with the refinished stock...Oh well...I still have all of the original stuff....It was a fun project and I really enjoyed doing it.
 
Who put the initials there? ?If they are Russian, it would be retarded to remove them. Dtuff like that almost never mafe it through qc, I've only seen one with a name under it.

Good point RMX initials may add some character but most of us probably want an undamaged stock.. we cant get that with some of our girlfriends,.. but we change what we can..lol.

Stock refinishing is a lot of fun and winter is a great time to do it when inside by choice and looking for something to do.
 
Thanks for the info, I'll give it a try. After I posted I noticed that there was alot of info on this subject already on this website. As for the comment about the initials, they are not Russian characters, that would be cool. Just a Y and J that seem go have been written by a 5 year old.
 
Ah. I once found a non refurb 1951 that had the name "Luba" carved into the stock in cyrillic between the magwell and bayo groove. How it escaped being refurbed is beyond me. Gun was sold when I went back for it the next day. I still shudder to think where it may have ended up, might be the only one of its kind out of MILLIONS of examples.
