Remington XP100, Savage Striker, Weatherby MarkV CFP

I am thinking of getting one of these fine pistols, for long distance target shooting and silhouettes.

What is your opinion and/ or experience with either of them, and which one would you recommend and why?

Perhaps most important question of all, which calibre should I chose?

I am leaning to .223 at this moment for availability, but this perhaps might not be the best choice in terms of accuracy?

Back in the day when I shot silhouette the most common pistol was the Remington XP in an HS Precision stock with wichita iron sights. Most common chambering was 7mmBR remington or 7mm-08 with a few 7mm IHMSA's thrown in. .223 is accurate enough but 223 does not have enough energy to reliably take down rams and turkeys (assuming) you are actually going to shoot metallic silhouette. There was also a few wichita unlimited pistols in use.
 
I found new Weatherby in calibre you are mentioning, but it is painfully ugly in comparison to XP100.

How about quality comparison between these two?
 
I have shot the Wby but never kept one for any length of time. Also TC's, Browns, and Wichita's. I have had a few XP100's, still have two, but have turned both into rifles. I will say this, in the right hands, I have seen an XP100 outshoot all comers at the annual fall turkey shoot, where most folks were using their hunting rifles. Extremely accurate guns. If our laws weren't so retarded, they would be an ideal hunting gun for some people. - dan
 
I've seen pictures of the Weatherby and the Wichita but I've never tried or handled them. A long time shooting buddy of mine is hot & heavy into TCs and while they seem to shoot OK, they don't do much for me. The Remington XP-100 was never really an item I had on my 'got to get list' either. Then, quite a few years back, I was offered a 'package' deal on a number of handguns, one of which was a XP-100 in 221 Fireball. Even came with an original Remington zipper case.

Even though it wasn't something I had any significant interest in, I thought I'd 'play' with it for a while before I put it up for adoption. At that time, I didn't have any great selection of 22 cal bullets around but I did throw together some quick reloads from what I did have available. I don't have any scanned targets or pictures of some of my later reload efforts with the 221 Fireball but here's one of those first targets.

Funny though, of all the guns that were in that 'package' deal the XP-100 and one other are the only ones that haven't been 'adopted out'.

I've never touched one and have been chucking s**t at my buddy about them for so many years,;) too late to change my opinion now. Might have something to do with his counter dislike of my bolt guns.

;)As our 'sparring' has continued, I told him, what I see as the 'niche' the TC fills in todays world of firearms. It's the perfect gun for an 18 year old hillbilly in ******** to buy himself as an elementry school graduation gift with his first welfare cheque.

Ain't that a truth, I would love to try XP100 hunting, but it's not gonna happen in this country.
I've seen Wichita's and those are interesting as well.

That is one fine pistol you got there, and in great shape. Not sure about that calibre and suitability for silhouettes sport.

I shot friends Contender on several occasions, but never had desire to own one. It just does not 'speak' to me.

I might have to source XP100 from USA, if I don't find one here... not in any particular hurry though.

On the other note, I got info from a friend about Savage thinking about bringing back Savage Striker.

Good news, I'll say... at this moment, I don't think there is any of these type of pistols in current production?

You're quite correct in your opinion of the 221 FB as a choice for use on silhouettes. That calibre my XP-100 is in would be better suited as a choice as a 'Gopher gun' or for use on preds like Coyotes.

And;), you echo my sentiments on the Contender:).
 
Fair price?

Now, let's hear your opinions on fair price for XP100 in mint/ excellent condition, please.

I found one in VG condition for $749, but would gladly pay little more for one that is collector grade.

My 31st edition of the Blue Book may be one or two editions old, but there, 98% - 100%, the suggested list is $850.oo - $900.oo. Condition, I'd guess mine to be 98% but generally speaking, to me they're not what I would think of as a 'collectable' item but that's just me. I have a Leupold scope mounted on mine plus the Remington zipper case. They're not something seen floating around every day but a local shooting buddy of mine picked one up about a year ago and wants my zipper case in the worst way. I'll have to ask and see what his cost him but I'd guess under $500.oo.

Dont kid yourself...a tc contender in .223 can be VERY accurate. The one I had and sold to a fellow member would shoot under 1moa all day long. The 221 fireball I had in a xp 100 with factory ammo wouldnt even come close to it. Here is the current xp100 I have in 7mm-08. Its a custom model and I havent shot it yet,hopefully this spring it goes out and burns some powder...If I was to buy one or the other...I would go with the tc,and here is why...The barrels swap out easily and add a new one and its a whole new handgun again for the cost of a $200.00 buck barrel.The older tc's have nice bluing on them,the grips suck but a little work on them to get rid of the finger grooves and they are real comfy.I sold my tc in .223 for $450.00 and it was in 98% or better shape. The XP100 below I bought for $600.00 with brass,dies,scope included and a soft zipper case also.This xp is in 98% or better shape..The walnut stock on it has a very soft warm glow to it,and when it came up for sale in the EE I jumped all over it real fast...

If you're considering importing from the USA you might also want to consider the MOA made in Wyoming. I'm curently looking for an XP myself but am also considering an MOA if I dont find one. I shot an MOA in Wyoming last summer and they are deadly acurate.

I am on a trail of one XP100 in excellent shape, from an estate of elderly shooter that passed away.
There are others interested in it as well, although I am a first bidder.

However, outcome is still uncertain.
