What do you think??

Right on! did he enjoy the milkshake? :D

It was kind of a "Dad, buddy, pal, can i um buy a 22?" him "I said no once, but its your money, whatever!"

so now, i would like a "tactical-ish" 22, do i go basic ruger, then put my new stock on it, or should i just go with the sr-22? If option 1, which stock? Is the ATI GSG-5 any good?

I take it that the old man just isn't a gun guy!
After some thought, you'll know which way to go with the .22
I enjoy my heavy barrel CZ .22 bolt action the most, sometimes shoot it for 3-4 hrs in a stretch. Got a Marlin 989 s/a, looks like a 30 M1 Carbine, sometimes have a little fun with it. Had an Erma EM1, was a fun gun, too. Had a brand new 1022, but it jammed quite a bit, so it's gone. There are a few other .22's around here, sure do like the M77 s/s, that one shoots any ammo the best, even the cheap crap. Happy shoot'n, young fella. :)

Congratulations on the way your problem worked out. You do need a .22, but it would have been a shame to trade off that first gun also. I'm glad you got to have both.

Now let's get to work on getting you a shotgun! Every bit as essential as a .22, don'tcha know....:)

By the way...I love your sig line.

My son was in the same (sorta) boat a few years ago when he was 15. I bought him a CZ .22 and he was ok with that until he saw my .17 HMR in action. I bought it used and the previous owner did some sweet work to it. He would borrow my .17 HMR to shoot gophers while the plinking was with the .22.

Funny thing about that was when he got a summer job a a local pizza joint, it was using my .17 which became his preference. He bought ammo. Long about 3 years later, he saw that most of my gopher shooting was with a .223 (lots of action). He bought a T3 in .223.

Long story short, the .22 became the safe queen. My advice. Have patience and do not get rid of your .17. It is by far the better rifle when compared to a .22. I have a Marlin 780 which I bought when I was 17. For the last 08 years, it has not been out of my safe, save to give it a wipe with a little oil. The .223 and .17HMR are the goto for gophers and plinking. My son has not used his CZ in about 4 years now.

Yeah, i got 2 of those already. Cooey single shot 12ga and remington 870 wingmaster. And thanks

hate to say it, it was my grandpas, then my uncles, now mine, and it has some dings and what not. Certainly not "mint" or nothing tho

Congrats on working that out with your father, that is a better way to go than my original advice.
I was under the impression all avenues of begging and pleading etc had been exhausted.

Have fun and keep shootin'

Figure I'd post this. I had an sr22(also my first gun) traded it and do not miss it not one bit. It was heavy to carry around, loud and not all that accurate. Most of the time I dont even remember I had one. I do however have a 17hmr (93r17) love that gun. Yes the ammo is a bit much(I reload 223 for a few cents more) but still a very fun and deadly accurate gun. Sr22 at 25 yards was 2-3 inch groups form a front rest the 93 from a front rest at 100 yards is well under 1 inch that alone is worth it to me.

You can't afford to shoot the .17 and your solution is to spend several hundred dollars on a .22? Boy you need a course in economics

As for the .22 it will be a dissapoint and go largely unused

I agree on the first part, but don't think you will be disapointed. I bought my first gun, a 12ga last summer and after shooting once with my buddy who had a .22 I went out and got one. I put 2 bricks through it this summer and had a blast.

I now have a .223, and 2 12ga but still plan on shooting my .22 this summer due to cheap ammo. I have shot it out to 200m with iron sights and scope. As for the gun though, I picked up a marlin 795 (10 round semi auto) for $140. I don't think you can beat it for the price.

i did, i guess i just asked enough, that he said whatever

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned much yet.

Skip the tacticool .22

Go buy a Marlin 795 from WSS. Couple Magazines and bricks of Remington HP. Go shoot cans and gophers. I mean really, its a .22 why would you spend 3x the cash for a tactical .22. Its like putting lipstick on a pig. Dress it up all you want, its a waste of cash and extra weight! Spend the cash on a bipod, sights, or optics.
