Ok this is my ten' th rifle I am looking to buy

I still in between a 17 HMr or 22 mag

So far I tend more toward the 22 mag

WSS as a lot of sale on model 917 for 17 HMr And 98x for 22 mag
These old series are discontinued since marlin came with the XT series

And there is also Savage but they are more expensive at the moment

So any input on your experience and recomandation these rifle

ps: I dont want to go with cz or ruger there are out of the budget for the moment or my wife will kill me again ...

I'd get an XT-22MVSR. Google the image... It's a nice looking rig, I'm not sure the cost though... The 983t is nice too though, albeit a little more plain jane, and old style trigger. Those old triggers can be modded real easy with a pen spring to make them much lighter.
I lean towards .22 mag also.

I handed my Marlin 917V to the police to have it melted down. I couldn't sell it to anyone. It was a POS. The scope bases were not drilled square with the rifle barrel. The action screws were too long so they scratched the bolt when sliding the bolt forward. Pure junk. Marlin told me just to use the dove tail mounts instead of the bases. That's Marlins way of fixing the problem. I will never own anything with Marlin on it ever again.

I have the XT22R and I love the damn thing. its super accurate and sooo inexpensive...Bolt is super silky smooth! Stock isnt the best but it def does the job!

Check out if WSS still have the Marlin 983T 22 mag ( older serie but alot better QC ), just finish a few minute ago installing a Burris scope on mine, this is my second one, it doesnt get more accurate than that... Cheers. JP.

Action screws or scope base screws? Either way its a pretty quick fix with a file/dremel/other cutting or grinding tool and not all that uncommon. While I don't think a factory rifle/accessory should need final fitting, you'd have to be pretty stupid to throw out a whole rifle for something that would take 2 minutes to fix.

Action screws. I just grind them down. Fixed the problem other than the bolt was scratched.

The scope base mounting holes were off center. It would shoot great at 50 yards. At 25 yards it would shoot to the right. At 100 yards it would shoot to the left. 150 yards I was lucky to get on the target. Mounting a cheap rimfire scope to the dove tail grooves it shot straight. I didn't buy a 17HMR to only shoot at 50 yards or shoot with a cheap ass scope.

I took it to Gene's in Selkirk and he said he would have to drill new holes in the receiver. The cost of such, is close to a new rifle. So its a POS not worth fixing. I sold the ammo I had on EE and sent the gun to the police to get melted down. Or would you be fine buy a rifle like this on EE and getting a surprise..........

Sorry to the OP, I don't mean to hijack the thread but this is nuts.

You can use weaver tipoff mounts to mount a 1" tube (high quality scope) on a 3/8" dovetail rail... Many of my guns are setup this way, and since marlin bolt action receivers are milled from a solid steel billet it makes for a very stable and accurate platform. You dont need to use a cheap scope just because it is mounted to a dovetail rail... That's ridiculous.
I guarantee there would be ZERO difference in accuracy between a base mounted and rail mounted scope on that gun. A Henry with cheap alloy receiver cover sure, but not a steel action.

And you could have sold it with it's flaws disclosed and taken a loss. I'd have given you $150-$175 for it. More than the cops gave you I bet. This "throw away" generation makes my head spin sometimes...

... POS not worth fixing because the base holes were drilled off centerf:P:

Here's to hoping I get a "good" 917V... I couldn't pass up the WSS deal to test out the 17HMR.

The other articles I read made it sound like if you could deal with the trigger or do the spring swap, it was a very accurate little gun.
