M305S - Ejection Snag

Hi Everyone,

Looking for a little advice, I tried the search function but nothing turned up. I love my shorty 305, and the last 3 times I brought her to the range, she performed flawlessly.

But 2 days ago at the range, I had a slight problem with the ejected casings: After firing 7 rounds consecutively (don't worry, 2nd mag) with all of the ejected casings landing in approximately the same spot, 1 casing came off the extractor, but then got stuck between the top of the bolt and the top of the barrel. I figured this to be a 1-off, so I pulled back on the op rod and removed the half-ejected casing.

But the next casing did the exact same thing - coming off the extractor, and getting stuck between the top of the bolt and the top of the barrel.

Let it sit for a few minutes, put 5 more rounds through her with no problems.

I suspect an ammo issue (Federal Powershok, been using Fed Fusion before, both 150gr), but am worried it may be a sticking ejector.

Thoughts?
 
Did you try a different brand while there to see if maybe it was that particular brand of ammo not working?
If you tried another brand and everything went back to normal you would have your answer.
 
That's kinda what I'm thinking. Both have 150gr bullets, and Fusion is only about 100fps faster at the muzzle, which is what weirds me out, since the casings immediately before those 2 were thrown 7ft away.
 
Check that your gas plug has not loosened off. Periodically checking during range sessions is a good idea. It should be tight always. Not saying it's for sure the issue, but it's the first thing I'd check.

I cleaned it that night, and remember the gas plug being tight on there, spindle nut straight up and down, no abnormal fouling on anything in the gas system.
 
it SHOULDN'T happen with factory stuff, but that's exactly one of the symtoms i ran into during load development- right around 42 grains of 748, using a 168 grain bullet- i started at 41 and was working my way up- what happens is that the piston hasn't enough gas to push the bolt back all the way and gets "caught" by the bolt coming forward again- also, that gas plug sometimes will loosen by itself if you haven't torked it properly

Make sure everything is lubed sufficiently.
Bolt, receiver, op rod, op rod guide & trigger group.
Try and alleviate any drag issues that may be slowing the cycling action down. Check the piston and gas system, make sure they are working smoothly.

The only other thing I can think of is to take the bolt apart, check the internals and swap out the ejector spring/plunger & extractor spring/plunger to USGI (easy job to do)
This will alter your ejection pattern from forwards to sideways.

If all other factor's are the same and you had the problem with that ammo I'd say it's the ammo.
Like I said try it with the ammo that worked and go from there.

Definitely want to upgrade to USGI parts. That'll happen after I pay for my trip to Florida haha

There is a bit of drag when pulling the op rod back, when the bolt pushes the hammer down. This area is definitely well lubricated, but the only source of friction I can tell. Breakdown and clean the trigger group maybe?

Sorry if it seems a bit newb-ish... I'm pretty sure it's because I switched ammo, but I love second opionions... which is why CGN rawks! :)
 
My chopped "M-14" is all stock except for the M-16 flash hider,and it work's great with factory and reload's.
Next is gonna be cast bullet's to see what happen's!
 
your trigger group is best sprayed with BRAKE CLEANER and q- tips- that's the way i was taught in the service except we didn't have spray- DO NOT take it apart- LEAVE THAT TO A SMITH EXPERIENCED ON GARANDS- then lightly GREASE it, and back togehter- as far as upgrading to usgi parts, you should see how it works BEFORE changing, and try somethiing OTHER THAN FEDERAL first to make sure it's not the ammo- everything you "upgrade" is connected to something else, and from what i've seen, all the recent norcs really suffer from is A LOUSY REAR SIGHT-in other words you MAY run into a money pit with NOTHING to show for it but a bunch uf usgi upgraded parts- it may NOT group any better
as far as checking the piston goes, doing the old "klunk" test will do- #### the rilfe , then turn it UPSIDE DOWN a couple of times and you should hear the piston "rising and sinking" in the cylinder- that's what the old cpo told us- exactly

Thanks for the input t-star! I was definitely approaching with hesitation, too many tiny parts for me to lose. Did the klunk test, the piston slides around just fine. Keep it completely dry, only friction I can tell is coming from the bolt contacting the trigger group, since that first inch of rearward travel on the op rod is smooth.
 
you want to use the FINE spray adaptor for the brake cleaner- it looks like a staw or compressed air with a straw adaptor to get into those tight little corners- if you let the hammer fall, be sure to cushion it so it doesn't hit the trigger guard too hard- it IS possible to break the hammer this way

It is seeming like some of the factory AND chopmod shorties are a little ammo sensative. The norc ammo recently imported seems to cause the most issues. So it would be wise to try a few brands

I think thatz why CanAm sold it for so cheap. Think about it...
Canada pays some of the highest prices for ammo in the world other wise it's not worth the big companies dealing with such a small market. Now you can get a M14 that retails in New Zealand for roughly $500 CAD and for $800 CAD here you get the same rifle and also a 1,000 rounds???

If it sounds to good to be true then it's most likely not. Not knocking CanAm at all for putting this deal together and yes it was a great deal. But instead I am honestly knocking those who expect this rifle to work perfectly with all ammo and think that there rifle is perfect right out of the box. Come on if that was the case then people like Hungry & M14Doctor wouldn't have to hold clinic's & show people what to look out for and what they should do to ensure that they are going to be good to go.
As for SmackSB4 please try to attended a clinic as many great people out there like t-star we be able to better understand what is wrong and what you need to due to debug your rifle alot easier in person then typing over the internet. Now if there was a gunsmith that still specilized in this field of rifles I would tell you to send it to him but for some reason there bench's are always closed.

Personaly I think that there is some sort of bur in the channel or the op-rod it's self or something else causing this to happen like in the gas system assembley area I would be on the look out for.

So, I'm getting knocked for asking for opinions? I live a ways away from anywhere the clinics are held, with no gunsmiths to be heard of. I've been trying different ammo. Groups with American Eagle were amazingly crappy, Rem CorLokt works well, but it's waaay overpriced up here, Fed Fusion works great, just having some issues with the PowerShok.

Nowhere did I say I expect the rifle to be perfect. I know it's not. That's the fun part - tinkering. That's why I came on here, to ask opinions on how to tinker better, and coming up with ideas that I haven't thought of.

I apologize for asking how to make my gun better.

Opinion's are like a&^hole's, everybody has one.
If it worked so far with everything you've tried and the problem was when you changed ammo then it's pretty self explanitory.
It's like reloading. If you have a load that work's and you change 1 factor it's pretty easy to figure it out.
But if you change several all at once your gonna shake your head.

And I alway's wondered if the m-14 is such a POS out if the box why are there no SKS clinics?
They seem to work right out of the box without the $500 fix.
Like I said,mine has no us part's on it and work's just fine.
If their such a bad deal why do they sell so well? Wouldn't you just save your money and by a US made one?
This sound's like the LEE VS Dillon argument.
