Okay, 8 month old H&R 22-250 with 115 rounds through it and the oversized wooden stock just started to crack and now chipped off and the action keeps unlocking after firing! PI$$ED OFF!. Downloaded a repair/return form from Gravel Agency and wonder if it's worth returning, if I want to shoot it at all again this year. (I heard they're REAL slow. How does one 'mail' a rifle anyway, do I need to tell the posties what's in the box? Should I just live with the action popping open? (getting used to it!) Wish I had never bought the POS.

That sucks,

You don't need to tell CP what's in the box, only the value if you want insurance on it. I would return it for repair as you paid for a new rifle and you end up with a lemon within a few months.

Same thing happened to my Handi in 500S&W. Very disappointing. It was fun when it didn't open up after firing. I've been slow in sending it back. Just another thing on the to-do list.

Did you make sure the locking 'lug' was free of oil? That's what I was told to check first. Didn't fix the problem, but worth checking anyway.

Yep, I heard the same thing. Cleaned it but haven't hit the range yet. I also filed the locking 'shelf' a tad. Seems like the wedgy lock thing isn't making enough contact, that, or the recoil is bouncing the locking wedge thing back on firing.

I find these guys to be the most knowledgeable on all things relating to these rifles.

You buy the rifle you figger you can afford...... but, heck, what does one save buying a gun in that price range? Why not just wait and save for something better? I've been tempted by guns in this price range but always managed to realize that quality is worth saving up for. Feel bad that it happened to you, but glad it wasn't me. Thanks for the reminder.

I bought my 10 year old daughter the synthetic youth model 243 a few years ago. What a piece of ####! It worked fine for a while but one time she fired it and the action flew open. The first time it happened she got scoped and cut her nose. I took it home and cleaned and degreased it real well. I took it back to the farm and shot it a bunch of times with no problems. I had my daughter fire it again to show her everything was ok. The friggin thing did it again but didn't scope her, it just scared the hell out of her and she started crying. Really handy, You buy your kid a youth model rifle to teach her to shoot properly and be comfortable with it. She ended up being afraid of shooting anything but the 22 for awhile. I had to start all over again with a 22-250 bolt action. I gave the 243 to a friend after he said he'd have it repaired for his kid.

It's not a price point for me. This is the only rifle that I could find in 500S&W. There just aren't any others to choose from. Supposed to be a company in the states making a lever action so chambered, but they seem to be stuck in pre production.
