Okey,
First let me explain why i wrote this thread in this section.
I am an Hunter, but i often need to shoot in the 500 yards. Think whatever you want, but i want to shoot with a 30-06. I have my reasons...
So, I need your advice on a 30-06, very accurate for an hunter, not for a sharpshooter. It need to be a carabine accurate summer as winter, in the rain and under minus zero celcius. Please, tell me what would be your choice on a budget (600$) or less. Also, if you have any idea for a scope, let me know.

500 yards is a long way for a hunting rifle. Savage is by far the best accuracy for the money but for what you are asking of it I'd save up for a cooper with good ziess sitting on top. Good luck

A savage can't accuratly shoot out to 500 ? News to me. Another one to consider would be the weatheby vanguard with detatchable mag for 613. Most hunting rifles out there now will hit a deers vitals at 500 ( even a Tikka :p ) but the closer you can get, the better. The big question is if the shooter can do it....takes lots of practice. and a rangefinder.

On the hunting channel, there's many mention of the rapid-z scope. What do you think about this one?

I think it doesn't fit into your budget......nice scopes though.
As for rifles the suggestions of a savage are true, they are cheap and many are accurate...but accurate junk is accurate junk.

How accurate are you looking for? I don't know of a guaranteed sub MOA rifle for under $600. I think they start with the Thompson Centers, and there's a nice one in the EE for $750 or so taxes and shipping in...
Thinking for out to 500 yards you'd want to go with something more than a 3-9 as well hey?

Care to expand?

Sure, the OP states he would like a rifle in the $600.00 range, chambered in 30-06. He then ask about the Zeiss rapid z he has seen on tv. You mention Savage as an affordable (read cheap) , most of the time accurate, option.

My opinion of Savage rifles is that they are cheap and not without problems. Sure many are accurate but so are many other off the shelf rifles with a lot more desirable attributes. IN MY OPINION they are cheap junky rifles, althought accurate junky rifles...for the most part.

As for the rapid Z. A regular Zeiss conquest sells for around $580.00 and the ones with the rapid Z reticles are over $600. Depending on the magnification they are closer to $900. So not exactly in the budget set by the OP. Any other questions?

Nope you answered it. Your uneducated "opinion" with no facts. And I wasnt refering to the scope. Way outta his budget

He isn't the only ones that think the sub 600 savages are junk.... many of us do....

OP, based on your demands a Weatherby vanguard is hard to beat.... buy just the rifle though... don't go with the scope package deal... those scopes are junk....

All your advices help me to make my choice. Thank you for everything. I think I should tell you why the 30-06 and why at 500 yards.
I will use the rifle for caribou hunting. This is not a very big game, and sub 250 yard, it often happen that the bullet kill two caribous at a time( it could be very embarrassing).30-06 it's not a very powerfull ammunition, but I have seen some guys doing some kill shots at 450 yards to 500 yards. Like me, they was on a budget. So,why the 500 yards. At my camp, the caribous always pass at the same place, in the middle of the lake, a little sub 500 yards. So, I can bench and wait.
A 500 to 600 carabine fit in my budget. Used or not, if the barrel is not burned and still enough good to let me practice many many rounds it's perfect.
Also, I don't reload. So I will need to use factory ammo. This is why I had interest in the rapid-z. As one said,900$ scope is out of my budget, but not a 600$ one. I am a beginner in rifles and scopes, but one thing I know if that someone should spend as much for the scope as the rifle.
Please, if you still have advice for me, I will appreciate that you continue the topic.

I didn't say savages weren't capable of a 500 yard shot. Myself love them I have a stevens and a savage. They work great and are very accurate. Cooper makes a guaranteed sub moa rifle. If wanting to snipe wildlife at 500 yards one should have the best equipment. I've never shot a caribou but I'm assuming the vitals are at least 10-12" circle as they're bigger then a whitetail. In hunting conditions with no wind flags that's a hard shot.
To the OP if you are worried about over penetration you may want to step down from the 30 cals. Maybe a 2506 if factory ammo is availible to you

I mentioned this over in the reloading section - those who like Savages probably don't mind Lee reloading products. No one can argue with the results. Personally, I probably get more enjoyment out of the process.

Now, about hunting rifles and accuracy out to 500 with a <$600 rifle: you may get lucky or you may have work to do. Having to do work on a POS to get it accurate is a frustrating endeavor - especially if you originally purchased something close to the $600 limit. You may end up with $1200 POS.

Go to Trade Ex and look at what they have. Call and tell them what you are planning. You will likely end up with a quality-built $300 rifle that shoots. If it needs work, it will probably be stock-related (complete replacement, crack repair, glass/pillar bedding) and you won't feel terrible sinking money into it.

Not sure where some get the idea the Savages are junk. To me they are some of the most dependable ......and accurate rifles out there regardless of price. If you want a true hunting rifle one that will withstand the elements as well as any other and get the job done it's hard to beat the savage and stay within your price range.
