Accurate 30-06 for hunter

I would argue that the cheapest way to make a decent bolt-action rifle shoot MOA or sub-MOA is to learn how to handload for it. This also has the benefit of providing larger amounts of ammo for practice. If the rifle's sub-MOA but the shooter isn't, it's a pointless exercise.

Used Parker-Hale / Safari would be about 350 - 400 if it's a floor plate model, then another 150 - 200 for a used Redfield Revolution 4x12, a Lee Loader for around $40 and a decent reloading scale (plus trimmers, etc) and you'd be in business for around $700.

Make sure to practice A LOT in varied conditions before attempting a long range shot on an animal. I've been hunting for decades and I am not yet confident in my abilities past about 300 yards in ideal conditions with a good rest to shoot from. There was a recent thread over on huntingbc by some guy who videoed a 500 yard shot on a deer that he hit in the a$$, resulting in a wounded and lost animal. You don't want to be the next guy to do something similar.

I never look at WSS..... too many horror stories.... and why the hell so much for the vanguard?.... ouch!

I totally agree with you on the fact that a gun doesn't have to be expensive to shoot well.... but it usually has to be well made to stand the test of time... and inexpensive guns are usually not well made....

In all seriousness once you have sighted in and practiced a bit how much do you shoot it? 3 or 4 boxes a year for your heavy hunting rifles

Don't want to open a can of worms here but 500yds? Just shooting or actually hunting? You should ,under most hunting situations, be able to close that distance to something quite less than that.

Looks like therte's lots at Tradex, even a Parker Hale Safari, plus lots of Husky's to choose from.. I like the Sako L61R there, too bad the metals a little rough...

Yes thats what we call translater use. Sorry to not having a fluent English. Anyway, all of you helped me to do a choice. Thanks for everything.

Stand the test of time. How much do you think it cost to turn out an Enfield. They're still around. I mean, guys on here paid $1100 for a brand new Ruger #1 that shoots 3" groups and they are happy with it. Give me a rifle that shoots 1 1/2" groups for $300 and as far as I am concerned, I'm ahead of the game.
Sorry that was for the Vanguard2. $540+ $27=$567. Pretty close to $600...

I shoot 5 under an inche with my new 30-06 M70 supergrade with factory Winchester ammo. I have a 2.5-8x VX3 on top of the rig. I am sure a higher power of scope with fine cross hairs would have helped make the group tighter. Haven't worked up a really good hand load yet though. The ammo I used to shoot the really good groups was Winchester Silver ballistic tip 165 grainers.

I am a Winchester fan but I hear that the Tikka guns are really accurate.

That's a good price for vanguard 2... And yes... Enfields built like tanks for sure....

I was refrring to long range hunting type firearms like op is looking for....

He isn't the only ones that think the sub 600 savages are junk.... many of us do........

I like my junk. :) I picked up a Savage 111 FLNS with accu-trigger for $550+ taxes new. I find it shoots pretty good out of the box, it's probably a heck of alot more accurate than I am. Bolt is nice and smooth, come with a user adjustable trigger, fit and finish are perfectly acceptable for a hunting rifle. I don't understand all the hate for Savage arms on this board.

From this past Wednesday. -6, 5 shots @ 100 yards.

I believe it is mainly a "status" thing. I havnt run across any real good arguments as to why the (non axis) savages are junk. A majority of the haters have had nothin to do with them

Perhaps wallets pine louder than the owners. Good on ya Zuk. But be sure to back it up at 200m or 300m, and then watch jaws drop.

I am astounded at the consitently amazing performance these "entry" level rifles produce. And then you can spend more of your hard earned bucks if you wish on perks like optics or mods. Those who do not look past all the basics continue to miss out. Such comments are only as good as the hot air produced to make it. d:h:

I have tried remies, winnies, brownings, savages, and todays rifles all work very well across the board. So more often than not it comes down to wallet book, form, and fit, and chest puffing. Now if you are a tried and true tinkerer the savage or stevens line will meet your needs.

PS..(shhhhh)..my stainless axis package with scope shoots lights out for $319 from the WSS boxing day sale, they go regular for $400. Off to buy more ammo components and mods with the money saved. Time to tinker some more.

Thank you to every one of you for your advices.
Finale, after long brain storming, I pulled the trigger on a savage model 116 fcss in 30-06.
A member here in the forum sold me one, like new, for a very affordable price.
I already have a scope, a bushnell elite 5-15x40 with parallax adjustment. But, I am not sure this is a good scope for this rifle, hunting big games between 100 and 500 yards.
If I say that my budget is 500$, that I will not practice target with this rifle but hunting only. That I want to trust my scope more than my wife.
And sometime I will need to shoot between 400 and 500 on caribous.so when I zoom with my scope, I want to trust it and know it will not affect the accuracy.
Seriously, what would you choice if you would be on a 500$ budget.
I had desire to go on zeiss rapid z but seem to be out of price.
But if most of you say I should consider this model, i will consider to go over my budget.

500 yards is a long long shot and I have seen quite a few 500 yard misses at 300 yards. Or at least 500 yards was the estimated distance.
I think you would have to dope the wind in caribou country. I have never been there yet but I have spent a lot of time on big frozen lakes and the wind never stop blowing on a day with no wind on shore.
