SVT Variations

Well, I have the SVT bug lately (usually I have the K98 bug).
Maybe I want to stock up on some of these historic rifles before they dry up like the RC's...who knows?

There seems to be many variations, and I am interested in how common each is.

Muzzle break - 6 or 2 Slashed
Maker - Tula, Ishevsk and Kovrov
Front Band - Stamped or Swivel
Bolt - Silver vs Plum
Mag - Early with side indent or Late Slab Sided
Side Rail - With or without
Stock - Naval AV stock or Standard
Sniper - With Notched top Reciever
Stock - Repair screw in hand grip area

I know that the Kovrov, Naval Stock and Snipers are less common, but rare?

1- About 1 600 000 svt 1940 where built. From that number, approx 51 000 in sniper configuration. The Kovrov plan built the svt for about 6 months so they are much rare than the tula or Ishevsk. On the kovrov built, some were sniper as well.

2- Early svt have the front band with swivel and late model have the 1 piece type. But as many svt were refurb post war, many time the part dont match anymore. I have a 1944 svt but refurbed, have a narrow trigger guard, 6 port brake and the swivel handguard band.

3- earlier model had 6 port brake, later 2 ports. Also earlier have narrow trigger guard and later have wide trigger guard.

4- scope rail were on until end of 1942 possibly very early 1943 but most 1943 will not have the rail.

5- 1944 was the last full year production, 1945 were only produced for like fews days so thoses are extremly rare catch.

6- Naval stock have a slot in buttstock for the sling(like mosin). Some naval stock come from avt replacement stock, they have 2 safety notch on the stock while other were regular 1 notch svt stock. Those stock appears late 1942. Again, many refurb svt have the naval and avt stock but doesn,t mean they were born with thoses stock. The reinforcement bolt on buttstock were put in during refurbishing to fix or prevent cracking since the artic birch used is soft and prone to cracking.

7- Bolt carrier were originally silver and plum on refurb ones but somes refurb still have the silver bolt carrier.

Since the svt we have now on canadian market are refurb, parts are not always correct for a given year.

That's the infos i have for now, somes fellows Gnners will surely come in to add precision:)

Just like GARAND, and value will increase very fast, because it's a nice rifle and shoot well.

They are now very rare in the gun surplus market, believe me.

Two contentious statements in one paragraph. Good job! ;-)

The plum colour is a mistake when the last few batches of imports were put through the German processing plant. For whatever reason the stainless bolt carriers were refinished, and done wrong. The originals were shiny steel. another consideration when buying an SVT, is to ask pointed about the length of the magazine. There are a number of the most recent ones with a 5-shot shortened magazine. Not original, and it is hard to find a replacement magazine without shorting someone else.

There are two other varieties of SVTs in Canada. Some b@stardized sporterizations done by Globe Firearms in Ottawa were sold twenty-thirty years ago. They took off the military looking parts, rechambered to .303BR and generally destroyed the gun, even for parts value. Secondly are Finnish SA-marked imports. These are genuine battlefield surplus guns, often picked off dead Russians and reused by the Finns. I believe these were guns that came to Canada around the same time as Globe's, but were not sporterized.

SVT40 Prices from what I've noticed at different dealers in Canada over the years:

1994 - $345

2005 - $499

Now - $299
 
I think Globe Firearms sporterized many of the SA marked SVTs ?

As for the plum colour, I haven't heard the story about the German processing plant, would you have more information ?
 
The plum color is a reaction in the chemicals (I believe Ni) and the heat treatment.
Same as the Extractors (Plum) of most Original K98's.
 
I'm glad I have a tula and izhevsk to hoard away. They will only get rare as the years go by.

And mags are rare. I just sold one and it went quick.
 
Thanks Coyote, now I know how those SVTs and my Kar98k, got that plum colour.

I actually like the plum colour on the bolt of the SVT, makes it look very attractive.

OMG that looks horrible! I wouldn't take that gun for free! H:S:
 
I had a another model of globe. It was still in 762x54r and not as bastardized but still rough. I just gave up and parted it out. lol.

SA stamped, so its a goddamn shame. but even with taking the needed parts from a refurb, its still a bitster :(
