Sometimes the truth isnt what you want to hear

Edited to add: This thread reminds me of something I had happen a few months back. I had a self proclaimed enfield "expert" ask me if I wanted a bubba'd no 4 for 50 bucks on one of the outdoor forums...said he hated sporters. I said sure (Any shootable enfield is worth that...right?), sent the cash, and a week later an EAL showed up at my door. :)

Reminds me of guy I used to shoot with... his nephew asked him to help him find a rifle for deer hunting... and he didn't want to spend more than $100

So the guy posted a WTB add in the local paper for a sporterized Enfield... Next thing you know, he shows up at the range with a Lee Metford Sporter

For a reason or another, he decided to keep that one for himself and find another rifle for the nephew...

Yes, just because someone has spent $500 on gunsmithing, mounts and scope all together doesn't mean you will get it back...

I've said it before and I'll say it again....:yingyang:...it's far more cost-efficient to buy a D&T Enfield sporter than to buy an undrilled/untapped sporter and take it to a smith yourself........the value of the gunsmithing will not be re-couped....:(

That said :) , has anyone else noticed how the price of No.4 sporters (as oppose to SMLE ones) has been creeping up, as of late ?

A woman who recently lost her husband has come to realize the bills are starting to amass faster than she can pay them off due to interest. So one day she calls me up and tells me she wants to sell her husbands rifle and thinks it's worth enough to pay off some bills.

When she told me what it was those I couldn't help but telling her the truth. That it's not worth as much as she thinks.

Simply put it's a sportarized 1941 ROFMNo 4 MK1 Number#E15244 with a Bushnell Scopechief IV on top of it. It's not that bad of shape since it was reblued and such but it's still sportarized.

She wasn't that happy to hear the news and frankly doesn't believe me. But I'll be posting pictures soon as I can here and then I'll show her this thread afterwards.

You should trade her your Dodge Dart (aka Dodge Fart) even up for it.

I remember just before the gun registration kicked in replying to ad for a Lee-Enfield sporter. It ended up being a Long branch #4 that had been refit. The guy wanted $60 for it. After I paid his eyes lit up and he went to a closet and pulled out 3 boxes of factory ammo that he threw in with it.

Yeah my guess would be 140-160 bucks depending on condition. Its a shame what a little bit of bubba'ing can do to the value of a milsurp rifle.

Yeah...those Churchill gunmaker bubbas sure turned out some 140-160 dollar crap eh?

All sporters are NOT created (or valued) equally!

I sold a Churchill with outstanding walnut, a machined top, fantastic bluing and an old scope for 450.00....and could have gotten more.

Why/how can anyone put a price on this gun when they don't even know what it is?

My first rifle was a Parker Hale 303. It had a flush box mag and was a very nice rifle. When I put it up for sale i was amazed at the amount of responses I had. Beautiful rifle and very nicely done.

Drache,

If it won't hurt you financially - why don't you offer her $250 for it.

Sure it's not worth that much, and it will probably sit in your closet a good long time but it's the decent thing to do if you care about her and want to help.

If you go this route, I'll toss some money your way to help cover some of the costs and I encourage other members of the community to do the same.

I was thinking of buying it even if it was just a $150 gun bit i didnt want ti to look like i just wanted a cheap gun thus this thread. there is a friend that was looking for a rifle for cougar defense after he was attacked by a cougar in his own backyard and he has 2 young kids to worry about.

As for pictures im still waiting on them. i was going to go out her place myself but the weather isnt cooperating.

He was attacked by a cougar in his own back yard

Didn't know things were that bad in BC...

Yep, we need more info and pics to get a proper evaluation. It is amazing what little detail will change a $100 rifle into a $1,000 rifle.

I'm in. Sounds like the lady could use some help.

FYI this is also the lady who's husband left me a handgun in his will which turned out to sadly be prohibited.

A bunch of us from work before winter hit went and brought her enough firewood to last her for the next three years. She made us chili and bought us each one beer for our troubles.

Her husband passed away and two weeks later one of her dogs passed away and exactly two weeks after that another one of her dogs passed away. She went through a terrible depression and still suffers slightly. She's a nice "old" lady who deserves better.

Exactly. She *may* be sitting on a rifle worth more than she thinks :)

What would make the rifle worth more? I know nothing about milsurps....

What specific things should I look for?

All I know is what the rifle is, that it was reblued, and the stock was cut down until I can get the pics or go see it in person.

In short: All sporterized enfields were not done by some guy in his garage....and *Some* may just have a highly sought after part as well....best to post pics.

As far as sporters specifically:

There were several commercial manufacturers that turned out very high quality sporters based on surplus No. 4's. A couple notable examples were mentioned in this thread: Parker Hale (yes, THAT Parker Hale) and Churchill Gunmakers.

Well done sporters, especially those with a commercial lineage can command a premium.....since essentially they are beautiful hunting rifles with rock solid Lee Enfield Construction.

We won't know until we see the pics, but the fact that it's been reblued *can* point towards it being a commercial sporter.

Pics man....pics :D

Edit: Here's a couple "bubbas" ;)

Parker hale:

And this one was mine....it's a No1 Mk 3, but similar quality is found on the #4's
