svt 40

my svt came from sfrc, i had asked for one made in 43/44, the one i got the reciver is stamped 43 and the stock 44, lol, hows that for service!
took it out to the range yesterday, tryed it out along with my new sks, fun stuff!
when it warms a bit i will take targets and a spotter.......
workin on a couple bayo's on e-bay...they seem cheaper in the u.k. than the u.s. and shipping is only $10 more....we will see
was thinking about vintage scope now, but my rifle is too new to take a scope....may have to buy another..or get some groves cut, anyone do?

Don't get grooves cut, it's a perfectly good rifle the way it is. When they built the sniper variants, they made them such for a reason, they're the best of the best. I know of a place in Quebec that sells a sniper variant for $400, no scope or mount, but they only take money orders.

Then an authentic scope will run you about twice the cost of the rifle, the only WWII one I've seen was around $750 for the scope and mount. A repro goes for about $3-400.

there seems to be a variety of repros and original scopes and mounts on e-bay with price ranges to match! i will probably get another with grooves, my understanding was that all rifles made with all nessasary scope mount machining were made in 40/41.(were all models made in the earlier years machined? dont know..). after that not all to no machining for scope mounts.
am i close?

Original scope run around $450-$500. I tried to find a original mount but no luck. A contact in russia told me that mount are almost impossible to have now, the rare ones he saw for sale go for $800 to $1000 and they are rusty at best.... Also, somes svt scope for sales on ebay are calibrated for M91/30 sniper, they are market SV(CB in cyrillic) on the elevation turret so the right model for a svt sniper should'n have thoses marking.

i have seen pics that proved even the germans used em, "it was so cold our guns wouldnt shoot, our tanks would not run and our planes would not fly.........but the russians were shooting, there tanks were moving, and thier planes were in the air"
(paraphrased from german stalingrad vet in documentry)

Here is an interesting pic from 1942, not only the slung SVT and what looks like an SVT bayonet on his left hip, note the PPSH 41 pouch on the soldier in the middle.

Plenty of the earlier models had rails on them, but you have to look for a notch out of the back of the receiver, on the top, for locking the scope mount in place. That's the mark of a sniper variant, it needs both rails and a notch.

they are an odd beast, mine was so rough inside the barral that it tore the patchs when I cleaned it....however it shot just as good as some of my boltaction rifles do at 100meters.

The tools from Westrifle (gas wrench and sight tool set) goes for 69.99. They are originals tools, not repro. Yes bayo are expensive, i bought one fews weeks ago:) For the noise, i only fired my large ports brake, loud enough but the louder rifle i have shot is my Hakim. You dont want to fire thoses without hearing protection believe me!!

70 dollars seems like roberry for an item that should be included with rifle.

I see, shame it messes up the case necks of the brass otherwise I would hand load for my SVT.

I end up using MFS ammo. Although it is non-corrosive, it sure leaves a mess afterwards as if it were surplus ammo :D.

You mean like all of those M305/M14S boxes that were opened, 1 of the mags removed, then sold to the consumer only to have to pay extra to get the 5/20 back that was in your box (as evidenced by the empty space that is suspiciously exactly the same size as the 5/20) to start with when it arrived from China. Very creative.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest... And yes, I did pay to get the gas tool for my SVT40.

Same here, I haven't had need of the tool for the gas and piston assembly, the only thing I can't get apart presently is the action screw in the stock.
