seeing lots of questions on work bench sizes being asked about lately..
on a average,how much pressure in ft lb do you think are required to force a stuck brass in or out of the die???
im thinking this info would help new reloaders in the construction of there benches/tables/stands or what ever you want to call them..
i,d say at least 100 ft lbs on the press handle..
what would your guess be??

More important is how it is held down, as the hardest operation of the press is often on lifting the handle.
Thus, as you say, it has to be held down so something on the order of 100 pounds can be lifted on the handle, without moving the table.

then again..ive seen one of them cheapish kitchen tables with a press clamped to it,loose a corner of it on the downward stroke:eek:
but i agree its the upward lift that gives the most grief
 
I find that if brass is sticky, it's best to take the die out and extract it with a stuck case extractor than to try to force it. Then make sure the rest of the batch are lubed better. Thus, I've used presses secured with nothing but C-Clamps. For really heavy duty work - swaging bullets and such, I've got a massively heavy single stage press, secured to an equally heavy work bench using 3/8"x6" bolts (machine bolts, with a washer and a nut on the other side, not lag bolts). I have no idea how much pressure this set up could tolerate, but I'm reasonably sure that my 9500lb winch on my Jeep would stand a 50/50 chance of tearing it off :)
 
I have been using my loading bench since I came to the Yukon. Built it more than 40 years ago, and never had to worry about it lifting up or tipping over because I sit in it!

I don't think a number is useful as there is no way to measure it; a hundred pounds of pressure on the handle would be multiplied a number of times at the shell holder. Suffice to say you should be able to peal the rim off the case without having the press fly across the room. I have a flat piece of cutting edge inlaid and bolted to my bench with round head carriage bolts, to which grade 8 bolts shanks are welded to hold the press in place, A piece of quarter inch plywood acts as a gasket between the two steel surfaces. I never have to worry about this thing moving.

Ummm... ft-lbs is a unit of torque or energy. It is not a unit of force or load.
 
Am away at the moment, so no picture, but it looks like a short, wide, sleigh with a desk top in front. It has two shelves under the desktop and two under the seat. The top is a double layer of 3/4" plywood, and is rabetted to the sides and front. The seat is of single 3/4" ply. The shelves are fitted into dado cuts in the sides and the front or back. All joints are glued and screwed. The glued-in shelves make it very sturdy. It has a solid bottom of half inch plywood.

Best part of all is you can move it easily to wherever you want to use it. Super Cub used it when he was here a few years ago, and said he thought it would be ideal for an apartment. No doubt it would, and it could be easily kept in a closet.
