Do I need a sight tool?

I am just wondering if people recomend pre-ordering and having a sks sight tool on hand for the first time the gun goes to the range.

Are the russian's usually pretty on target right away, or do they need a bit of work with the sight tool?
 
A sight tool is very handy but a hammer and punch will do the trick. Rifles are zeroed to the shooter. So any rifle you pick up will probably need a bit of tweeking.

I might as well pick one up, I noticed Canam has them for 10$ - seems pretty cheap. I think back in the day when I had an SKS-D I put an optic on it right away so I never really played with the sights.
 
Take it out to the range, try it off a rest and see where its hitting. I went thru two sight tools (both broke first when I tried to adjust post elevation) before I just corrected for how much my rifle was out. Now I can get it where I want it just about every time.
 
The tool is very handy for adjusting in fine or course increments. Having that said, put a bit of penetrating oil onto your front sight and drift it at least once with a hammer and punch. Many of these old rifles have the sights seized into place with age. Once you can tap it freely with a hammer, your sight tools are a wonderful item to use. If your sight is unable to move before you go to the range, the tool is of little value and often gets damaged, not to mention a wasted effort at the range without the needed tools.

I make sure my sights can move BEFORE I head to the range. All rifles, all ages, all models.

Thanks for the info guys...i would not have thought of loosening the sight post before heading to the range.

Is the 20$ tapco tool above mentioned any good or should I get the 29$ oneshottact one? Source for the tapco?
 
I bought the standard NCStar one. Went to take off my front sight to install my firesight. Broke the tool on the first try. I think i am going to have to get one of those fancy heavy duty ones.
 
my '54 Rusasian SKS shot 4" left at 100 yards when i bought it. sight ajustment tool is well worth the 7 dollars. you can get some faczy stainless ones for ~$20 if you like.
