I have received these information from Different last September and have permission to post it here.

All credit goes to Different (Lee Emerson) to help those have questions about the bolt hardness on the Chinese made M14s / M305 rifles.

nice presentation, but i don't believe it's RELEVANT as lee hasn't had an opportunity to test the current production bolts which is LIGHT YEARS away from the old "soft" bolts of the 90's - i believe one of the members here has more current data- there's VERY few of the "old" m14s remaining, and the chinese have"seen the light"- part of the "problem " is that lee( different ) resides in the usa, and they've had an embargo on the chinese rifles since 94- so the testing date doesn't matter, as it's the old steel and hardening-
TO ALL THE NEWBIES WHO BOUGHT THE M14S RECENTLY
1 ) DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING you read on the net unless it's from a VERIFIED CANADIAN SOURCE- ie hungry, mystic, or somebody on THIS BOARD
the other data is based on OLD rifles
esp anything from fulton or CLINTas he has his own agenda and wants to sell his own rifles
QUIT SCARING THE NEWBIES WITH THIS B/S

I agree, the new norinco production guns are very different.

This is kind of like presenting tests on car engines made in the 80's and using them on current models.

Like taking apart a 1990 4cylinder ford mustang and using it to compare to a brand new 2012 model. Same mustang, different car. I'd say the same with the internals on the norcs from then and now.

Hmmmmmm
I can honestly say, I have not tested any chinese bolts. However, I would also say, as a guy who has spent 4 to 10 hours, 5 to 7 days a week for the past 3 n change years, building, tweaking, tuning and shooting these rifles......
The chinese bolts appear to be just fine. There has been some failures of bolts, barrels and hammer hooks, a few even reported on this board. These have been extremely rare, factory defects, and I've read some the same parts issues with respected high end rifles, a few of those being very popular bolt guns.

I would be interested in testing some bolts, or rather pay to have them tested.
We need a bolt from a rifle imported post 2000 but pre 2005, a bolt from import years 2005 - 2008 and 2009-2011

Perhaps these can be sent to an outfit like Thermex in Edmonton? If they do such testing?
Anyone here from edmonton that would care to call them and see?
I can supply a 2009 bolt and I'd put up all or some of the cash, depending what it costs of course.
Who's in for calling a metal hardness testing outfit and getting the "myth" busted :D

Y'know, this topic comes up every couple of years or so. I guess it was due.

When I first got my 2009 rifle I succumbed to the hype of those old posts. Went a clinic hosted by Hungry and pushed about 900 or so rounds through my rifle. Before that clinic, I bought the requisite headspace gauges and faithfully checked it. After the clinic, never checked until I replaced with USGI bolt. No changes to headspace.

Don't worry about the hype. Do regular maintenance, just like you would your car and any other rifle. Register for a Clinic in your area and relax.

Life is good. :D

I work for a materials engineering and testing firm in Edmonton, if you get the bolts together, I'll make the arrangements and get the costing together. We can do the chemistry, too. If you want metallography done, I'll do it myself for nothing.

Hmmmmmm

What are you guys going to leave for the haters - we already know that the 1911's are made from forged 5100 (thanks to Claven) now you're going to prove there's nothing wrong with the M14 bolts. Seriously, you're all merciless. :D

The USGI Bolt is a "must" idea is kinda myth too. There are genuinely good reasons to have a GI bolt installed and the main one is that, gernerally speaking, the correctly installed GI bolt will give you a nice match .308 chamber of 1.630 to 1.632 with the chinese barrel. Which IS nice to have :D.

As usual, this board delivers with it's in depth knowledge of the M14 platform! I'd personally love to see the results of metal testing on the Chinese bolt, not because I have any apprehensions about it's serviceability but just cause I'm a nerd for that kind of stuff. :D

I'm sure Different would greatly appreciate us performing and sharing any results we glean from such testing.
I have a real nice unmolested, unfired 2009 import bolt I'll gladly donate for testing. Anyone have a bolt they care to donate?
